The Senior Advisor is a member of the ACS Senior Management Team and assists the Chief of Staff, President and EVP of ACS with communication, organizational development, and strategy. The Senior Advisor serves a key role in shaping the public messaging of ACS and in identifying new opportunities for ACS to influence the debate on key policy and legal issues. This is a new position and the job description is likely to evolve to meet organizational needs and opportunities. The Senior Advisor reports to the Chief of Staff.


RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Help craft the organization's overarching public messaging and communications strategy to achieve ACS goals and build the organization's profile.

·       Write substantive and persuasive articles and press materials about ACS priorities, including for ACS senior staff. 

·       Prepare and approve written materials in collaboration with the Communication Director including action alerts, talking points, issue briefs, and website updates.

·       Help lead the organization's rapid response to fast-moving events.

·       Help expand ACS' digital footprint and engagement with new media outlets. 

·       Advise the ACS President on organizational operations, strategy, and communication. 

·       Serve as a thought partner to the ACS President and senior staff, including helping to turn new ideas into action items.

·       Coordinate with existing partner organizations and identify new opportunities for ACS to collaborate with other organizations and policy and legal experts.

·       Develop strategies to achieve ACS policy and programmatic goals, including eliminating the federal death penalty, promoting judicial nominations, and supporting ACS chapters.

·       Oversee and assist with special projects as they arise.


QUALIFICATIONS

·       JD required. 

·       At least 8 years of professional experience, preferably in a policy or legal field. At least two years of experience working for a 501(c)(3) organization preferred.

·       Experience helping to build an organization or department, including expanding staff, hiring and working with outside consultants, and building the policy influence of an organization through strategic coms.

·       Experience staffing a principal at a senior level. 

·       Excellent writing, with the ability to produce polished writing on short notice and under a tight deadline. Experience writing substantive articles on policy and legal matters. 

·       Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire issued based expertise.

·       Experience interacting with the media, including giving press interviews and preparing others for press engagements. 

·       Experienced public speaker.

·       Experience working independently and executing projects with minimal instruction and oversight. 

·       Demonstrated ability to take abstract ideas and turn them into specific action items that advance the mission of an organization, and to oversee a project from conception to completion.

·       Creative thinker and problem solver. Action oriented.

·       Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including prioritizing DEI in organizational development.

·       Commitment to the highest ethical standards.
