The mission of Chance Academy is to be an educational community that serves as a center for learning, fostering community and belonging, wellness, peace-building, and cultural literacy for our students and their families.

We are a small, private nonprofit day program committed to serving all families who wish to enroll.  No family is turned away for inability to pay our modest tuition.  Free tuition is offered to families with annual income of $50,000 or less.

Seeking In-person Science and Elementary Math Teacher

Chance Academy is seeking a dynamic and experienced Science educator to develop and implement a Science program for our K-8 students and to teach elementary math using our Singapore Math curriculum.

Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

As a private program, we focus on in-depth and student-relatable learning to develop balanced, forward-thinking, out-of-the box individuals. To that end formative and summative assessments drive our classroom progress; NOT simply checking boxes that objectives were delivered. As such we provide our instructors with the independence and responsibility to implement lessons and adjust plans to meet the community wide established goals and objectives to prepare students for college or other careers that demand people who are dynamic and flexible.

Job Title: School Science Instructor, K-8 and Elementary Math Teacher, K-5

Location: Northeast Washington DC area

Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • Exhibit a collaborative approach to create, modify, and implement science learning goals and objectives that are informed by the Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Ability to work with all administrators, teachers, and students with professionalism, dignity, respect, and care in all situations.
  • Passion for teaching and continued personal growth in knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Joy in working with children, laying a social-emotional foundation upon which academic excellence may be built.
  • Individuals who have had modeling instruction training and/or applied the principles of modeling instruction are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Support and model the mission and founding documents of Chance Academy.
  • Alongside the Chance Academy team, imagine, design, and implement a Science curriculum that inspires, supports, and challenges students.
  • Assess the strengths and needs of students, using a variety of formative and summative assessments.
  • Share student progress with the student, their other teachers, and families on a regular basis.
  • Creatively and flexibly implement a Science curriculum and lessons as student needs are observed and assessed both formatively and summatively.
  • Create differentiated, challenging Science lessons promoting intellectual growth and critical thinking skills.
  • Support and contribute to the socio-emotional development, personal wellness, creativity, and restorative justice practices that inform our approach to learning.
  • Continue to grow as a professional and individual through professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain professional and collaborative collegial relationships that encourage sharing, planning, and working together toward improved instructional skills and student success so that students see the interconnectedness of all their learning.
  • Communicate with families respectfully and openly about student progress, goals, and objectives, and showing an ability to ask questions and listen with empathy.
  • Seek guidance and support from colleagues and administration when class, student, or parent concerns arise.
  • Regularly use our learning management system to deliver lessons and communicate with students and families.
  • Participate in program events such as staff meetings, night-time community meetings, student-parent conferences, small group collaborative meetings, and orientation.
  • Perform supervisory duties that include, but are not limited to, recess, lunch and dismissal.
  • Be willing to substitute and/or assist other teachers with their classes including those outside your subject area.

Position Details:

Full time, 32-40 hours/week; Salary: $35.74 - $45.12 per hour, based on education level and experience

  • Classes will be in person onsite

Schedule:

  • 6-8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
