The California Homeless Youth Project (CHYP) is a research and policy initiative of the California Research Bureau. The project is committed to bringing youth to the policy table and to informing policymakers, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders about the needs of unaccompanied homeless youth. This project seeks to improve understanding of young people ages 12 to 24 who are on their own and the issues they face. These include family conflict and other reasons for being on the street, lack of shelter and educational opportunities, health and mental health needs, and the effect of interactions with the criminal justice system. The project highlights solutions for these youth by engaging them directly in research and policy discussions, and giving voice to their experiences and recommendations as well as those of researchers, practitioners, and policy experts.

We are located in downtown Sacramento. Funding for the project is provided by The California Wellness Foundation and the Walter S. Johnson Foundation. CHYP is looking for a full time Project Director to continue the work and shape the ongoing vision of the organization.

Essential Duties:

  • Meet regularly with community based and national organizations serving young people experiencing homelessness
  • Enlist young people with lived experience of homelessness in shaping the research and policy vision of the CHYP
  • Educate others on youth homelessness through research, YouTube videos, speaking at legislative hearings, conferences, webinars, and conversations with service providers, policymakers and youth
  • Produce original research, literature reviews, and issue briefs on various issues facing young people experiencing homelessness
  • Plan and coordinate events to bring policymakers and researchers together to discuss solutions to homelessness in California
  • Engage in social media to share reports, articles, and videos on youth homelessness
  • Analyze policies related to youth homelessness and provide technical support on legislation impacting this population
  • Represent the CA Homeless Youth Project at local, state, and national events. This position includes frequent travel both in and out of state
  • Secure grant funding and monitor, evaluate, and record grant progress

Minimum Education and Experience:

1. At least three years of direct care experience in an agency providing direct services to people experiencing homelessness.

AND
