The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms by guiding justice innovators, nationally and internationally. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

The Staten Island Justice Center offers an array of programming for both youth and adults in Staten Island, focusing on engaging those with current or past justice involvement. The Justice Center provides judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys with alternative community sentencing options that hold individuals accountable in a way that is meaningful, proportionate, and restorative. The goal is to provide participants with individual and group services that help them to avoid future contact with the justice system and promote swift case resolutions that bolster public confidence in justice.

The Staten Island Justice Center (Justice Center) is seeking a Deputy Director. Reporting to the Project Director, the Deputy Director will assist in oversight of day-to-day operations; mentor and motivate dedicated staff; strengthen justice system and community partnerships; create new and innovative programs; and seek out opportunities for growth through network building and fundraising.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supervise all Justice Center programs and department leaders, including conducting staff reviews and performance evaluations;
  • Assist with staff recruitment, training and onboarding protocols;
  • Identify potential staff development and training needs;
  • Manage staff relations to promote teamwork and provide support to ensure that staff achieve program goals and objectives;
  • Maintain and establish relationships with court players, community-based organizations, community leaders, and other partners;
  • Identify community hot spots and work with staff to develop programming that empowers residents, creates civic opportunities for youth, reduces crime and sparks community revitalization;
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and program management;
  • Oversee the quality of program data and materials;
  • Assist the Project Director and the Center’s Development team in grant management and writing;
  • Manage program reporting, performance deliverables and program expenditures as required by funder and grant reporting requirements;
  • Devise and implement strategies for improving interdepartmental communication;
  • Develop program policies and procedures to improve service delivery and reinforce the mission and values of the Justice Center;
  • Assist the Project Director in fundraising and grant management activities, including pre-proposal brainstorm meetings, drafting/organizing of proposals and progress reports, and tracking of deliverables for each funding stream;
  • Represent the Justice Center at stakeholder and community board meetings;
  • Assist the Project Director with administrative responsibilities, as needed;
  • Additional relevant duties, as needed.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in law, public administration, social work, or a related discipline. Candidates must have at least five years’ relevant experience in a leadership and management role. Experience with strategic planning, managing program operations and grant contracts required. Experience with programming aimed at serving both adult and youth populations strongly preferred. Must have a demonstrated track record in leading diverse teams and strong relationship building. The ideal candidate will be sensitive to the needs of the populations served by the Justice Center and will have client engagement skills reflective of a strengths-based approach. The ideal candidate must also be able to multi-task and be highly organized, exhibiting excellent attention to detail. Must have an interest in leading and developing programming in the areas of positive youth development, problem solving justice, and community engagement in addition to building relationships with stakeholders and the community at large. Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, and writing skills are required. Candidate must be a skilled communicator able to work in multi-disciplinary setting and maintain strong relationships with multiple agencies and organizations both onsite and in the community.

Position Type: Full-time, some evening and weekend hours required.
