BDS represents more than 45,000, primarily, indigent clients per year in criminal, family, and immigration defense proceedings in Brooklyn, New York, . BDS represents clients who have diverse, complex and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and very fast-paced setting.

Brief Description of Job

BDS seeks an energetic social worker to become an integral part of the mental health unit of the criminal defense practice. The ideal candidate will provide clinical social work support and advocacy to seriously mentally ill BDS clients in criminal court proceedings, the community, and correctional facilities. The mental health unit at BDS seeks a social worker to work with individuals with a diagnosable mental illness who are facing criminal charges in Brooklyn Supreme and Criminal courts.

Responsibilities

The Mental Health Social Worker is responsible for:

  • Conducting clinical/mental health assessments.
  • Assisting in work related to Fitness to Proceed issues, and provide crisis intervention services to BDS clients with known mental health histories, as well as clients who present with symptoms of a serious mental illness.
  • The Mental Health Social Worker also provides both written and oral advocacy for clients, particularly in seeking mental health treatment as an alternative-to-incarceration.
  • In addition, the Mental Health Social Worker will develop service plans, refer clients to community-based and City correctional facilities mental health services , and will assist in the coordination of clients’ care.
  • This position requires visits to incarcerated individuals in correctional and hospital facilities.

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A Masters Degree in Social Work with.
  • At least, three years of professional social work experience.
  • In addition, applicants must be licensed, preferably with an LCSW (LMSW candidates will be considered).
  • Candidates must have a working knowledge of community-based mental health systems and the Office of Mental Health protocol/regulations and possess strong mental health assessment skills. Strong writing skills are a must for this position.
  • Applicants must also be willing to work as part of a team in a very fast-paced environment and need to possess excellent writing, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Strong preference will be given to applicants who have experience working in forensic settings.
