South Bronx United Inc. (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change. Its mission is to prepare youth to succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU serves more than 1,100 boys and girls annually through programming on the field and in the classroom, including academic enrichment and tutoring, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness, immigration legal services, and other individual and family supports. The majority of youth served are from immigrant families and many were born outside of the country. While the South Bronx has the nation’s highest poverty rate and low educational outcomes, SBU makes a significant difference in the lives of its youth. In the last five years, 100 percent of youth in the organization’s core program, the SBU Academy, have graduated high school, 92 percent have graduated in four years, and 94 percent have gone on to attend college.
South Bronx United seeks a Social Services Program Manager with a background in Social Worker, Counseling, Youth Development, or Case Management to help the organization meet the social-emotional needs of its youth; manage cases of at-risk and immigrant youth; refer youth and families to outside social services; support outreach efforts for immigration legal services and Know Your Rights sessions; and work with program staff to ensure the continuation of strong academic and social outcomes. The individual will primarily with the SBU Academy, which serves approximately 190 youth, ages 12-19, during the school year. Nearly all of these students are from immigrant families, about one-third were born abroad.
The position must work collaboratively with program staff, coach-mentors, and volunteers to achieve the organization’s mission and impact youth outcomes.
1. Provide social and emotional support to help youth develop into civic minded leaders.
• Manage individual youth cases, including meetings, referrals, and coordination with school, family, and other providers.
• Coordinate social, emotional, and behavioral interventions.
• Hold individual and group counseling for select youth.
• Address emergency mental health needs.
• Plan and conduct workshops to promote character development, conflict resolution, and leadership development.
2. Work with program staff to ensure youth meet academic, college preparatory, and social outcomes:
• Collect and monitor quantitative and qualitative data on attendance, behavior, and performance trends.
• Develop strategies to increase and maintain students’ engagement in academic programs.
• Institute program-wide practices for individual goal setting.
• Conduct periodic interviews with youth to assess student progress and emerging needs.
• Collaborate with and supervise program volunteers, mentors, and junior staff in delivering youth programming and serving as youth mentors.
3. Partner with external organizations and referring youth for outside services.
• Coordinate referrals for youth and families to outside agencies (including education, mental health, legal services, physical health).
• Build partnerships with community organizations that serve as youth resources.
• Manage relationships and facilitating communication with youth’s schools, teachers, and counselors in order to collect student data and communicate regarding youth attendance or other concerns.
4. Facilitate family/parent communication and involvement.
• Communicate with parents and families on issues and activities concerning their children.
• Organize family-oriented and community-based programs and events as needed (immigration seminar, health/wellness day, clothing/equipment drives).
• Coordinate family education and parent meetings.
5. Support outreach, education, and advocacy efforts around immigration and other social services:
• Conduct outreach to youth and families on various services provided by SBU.
• Provide basic information to youth and families regarding potential avenues of immigration relief.
• Complete training for Department of Justice Office of Legal Access Programs (BIA) accreditation.
• Work with Immigration Services Program Manager to support youth and families and to plan and deliver Know Your Rights Sessions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
A strong candidate should meet the following requirements:
• MSW or BSW with at least two years of experience in youth development is strongly preferred.
• Sports-based youth development, youth services, or case management experience
• Experience working closely with youth and families
• Effective in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings and understanding of individuals of all backgrounds
• Interest in addressing immigration issues with youth and families
• Strong team and communication skills
• Strong interpersonal, mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment, juggling multiple responsibilities within a young, developing nonprofit organization
• Flexible and adaptable to work in a variety of settings
• Strong administrative and computer skills
• Familiarity with the South Bronx community or other neighboring communities is preferred
• Spanish speaking strongly preferred. French speaking is a plus.
Full-time, hours are aligned with programs which include two evenings during the school year and occasional weekend events.
