About Us

Equity Legal Services (ELS) is a legal services non-profit organization that works alongside communities of color and other historically underserved communities who are regularly impacted by environmental and structural poverty issues with an emphasis on legal assistance, advocacy, and community empowerment.

Our practice involves strategic litigation with a focus on issues that most affect disenfranchised populations, low-income individuals, and communities of color. Strategic or impact litigation is the practice of law that not only serves the immediate needs of one or a few clients but has the opportunity to effect lasting and necessary change for others in the community as well. Through this practice, we are currently working with residents in the community of Centreville, Illinois, who have endured decades-long environmentally unsafe conditions from stormwater and sewage overflows in their homes, yards, and throughout their community. With a host of partners, academic institutions, and team members, we continue our work alongside the residents of Centreville to bring much-needed change and relief.

ELS is seeking a full-time, temporary(12-month) attorney who is passionate about social justice issues. This Contract Attorney Position is an exciting opportunity for an attorney with an interest in community-centered lawyering to work collaboratively alongside scientists, educators, and experts in the community on issues related to, civil rights, environmental justice, and community mobilization.
