Role

The UP Teaching Fellowship offers aspiring educators a hands-on educational experience that incorporates rigorous coursework and practice with real-world, real-time experience in an urban public school.

UP Education Network partners with the Sposato Graduate School of Education (SGSE) to select 8 to 10 Teaching Fellows per year. Fellows work full-time at an UP Academy in Boston while taking courses, working toward their MA teaching license, and earning a Master’s of Effective teaching (MET) as students at the Sposato Graduate School of Education (SGSE).

The UP Teaching Fellowship is meant to develop Fellows into exceptional teachers who understand the needs of students in urban schools. During year 1, Fellows work as full-time Cluster Substitutes at an UP Academy, attend Sposato classes and practice sessions with a cohort of fellows from UP and other Boston-based schools, and receive support and coaching from their host teacher, school leaders, and Sposato faculty and staff.

Fellows apply for a lead teaching role at UP Academy for year 2 and complete additional coursework and assessments with Sposato, culminating in a Master’s of Effective Teaching.

Specific Responsibilities

At UP Academy:

Throughout year 1 of full-time graduate studies at SGSE, fellows will spend time in the classroom with a host teacher and engage in the broader school community as a building-wide Cluster Substitute teacher.

Specifically:

  • Fellows will support execution of core program features, including upholding high and consistent academic and behavioral expectations, supporting seamless and detailed operating procedures, and implementing rigorous, standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessments.
  • Fellows will cover classes as needed, ensuring that all students have high-quality and continuous instructional support.
  • Fellows will receive consistent coaching in the fall semester and support during student teaching in the spring from a school-based coach.
  • Fellows will engage in at least 150 hours of teacher practice over the course of the year. Instructional responsibilities will be structured so that a Fellows may begin the year observing and supporting classrooms and culminate the year in teaching full units of instruction.
  • Fellows will build invaluable experience engaging in the operations and culture of a high-functioning school environment.
  • Fellows will participate in planning time, cohort meetings, and school-based professional development in order to support instructional content development and to develop skills as a curriculum planner and member of a broader school community.

At Sposato Graduate School of Education:

  • Complete all SGSE coursework, which involves 2-3 nights per week of scheduled classes;
  • Participate in Saturday SGSE coursework and group practice;
  • Meet all other SGSE program requirements. For more information, see the SGSE website.

Qualifications

  • A strong belief in UP Education Network’s core values: Students, Community, Humility, Resilience, and Humor
  • Admission into the Sposato Graduate School of Education (concurrent with application to be placed at an UP school)
  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Current authorization to work in the United States – a candidate must have such authorization by their first day of employment

Compensation

Year 1 of the UP Teaching Fellowship is an 11-month position, July 30, 2019, through June 30, 2019. The Fellow is hired as a Cluster Substitute Teacher and will receive a salary of approximately $36,000 (based on a daily rate of $181); total compensation will depend on total days worked. As an employee of UP Academy and your respective school district, you will receive the same access to personal and sick days, health insurance, and dental insurance as others within your union.

About UP Education Network

UP Education Network operates six schools in Boston, Lawrence, and Springfield, MA. We serve more than 3,000 elementary and middle school students. UP is invited by local school districts to restart chronically underperforming district schools as UP Academies. Each UP Academy shares the same mission: to ensure that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and strength of character necessary to succeed on the path to college and achieve their full potential.

About Sposato Graduate School of Education

The mission of the Sposato Graduate School of Education® (SGSE) is to prepare unusually effective rookie teachers for schools serving low-income students.  The program is mapped backwards from the demands of working in the highest performing urban public schools in America, and is distinctly different from other traditional graduate schools of education, or alternative programs like Teach for America.  The first of this two-year program involves full-time graduate study and placement in a high performing urban school (in this case, an UP Academy).  During the second year of graduate studies, individuals are hired as full-time teachers and receive coaching and support from SGSE staff. SGSE coursework begins in August 2018.  To learn more about the program, click here.

We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply for any open position for which they are qualified. Our students must be exposed on a daily basis to a diverse group of powerful role models. Therefore, we have a responsibility to recruit, retain, develop, and reward a diverse and talented staff from a wide range of backgrounds to join our creative, mission-driven team.
