The Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth (BAGLY) believes in creating safe and brave spaces led by and for young people in order to build a strong youth-led social justice community. Founded in 1980 by LGBTQ+ youth, BAGLY is an organization led by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth to meet the core physical, social, and developmental needs of Greater Boston’s LGBTQ+ youth community. Today, BAGLY provides community-based leadership development, health promotion, and social support programs for Massachusetts’ LGBTQ youth communities, and is a leader in local and national LGBTQ+ youth advocacy. Through partnerships with Boston Children’s Hospital, Point Source Youth, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and other collaborators, BAGLY is working to expand its behavioral health programs and develop new programs addressing the housing, food, clothing, direct aid, and other basic needs for LGBTQ+ youth statewide.

As Director of Finance & Administration, you will serve as a thought-partner on the senior management team, playing a critical role in setting financial and operational strategy to support BAGLY’s growth and programmatic impact. Overseeing an annual operating budget of almost $2MM, you will lead the annual budget planning processes and audit preparation, as well as fiscal contract administration. You will also play a pivotal role in overseeing financial forecasting, helping to ensure BAGLY is continuing to find innovative ways to manage funds in support of LGBTQ+ youth programs. From an administrative perspective, you will work to steward organizational capacity in relation to our commitment to BAGLY employees in areas like benefits and compensation philosophy. In partnership with the Executive Director, you will further develop BAGLY’s human resources and administrative operations, including review of compensation and benefits offerings.

This role reports to the Executive Director and will supervise the Business Manager. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The key responsibilities of this position include:

Financial Leadership & Management

  • Manage, develop, and direct the annual operating budget and audit process, including the preparation of forecasts on the financial condition of BAGLY
  • Provide effective and timely communication of critical financial information and recommendations, including relevant trends, forecasts, risks, and opportunities, to the Executive Director, the Board, and other senior team members
  • Working closely with the Director of Programs, oversee state, city, and large institutional contract budget management and amendments that fund programs and services
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the organizational financial strategy
  • Work with other senior team members to develop actionable business and operational plans.

 Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Direct the day-to-day accounting operations including oversight of accounts payable and receivable, maintenance of the general ledger, and grant accounting
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process ensuring all required entries, reconciliations, and financial statements, and other reporting are completed
  • Prepare and review journal entries and reconciliations regarding income recognition and expense accruals
  • Prepare, analyze and present financial reports (income statements and balance sheets) in an accurate and timely manner and clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements to the Executive Director
  • Manage the process for external audit and preparation of annual consolidated financial statements in conjunction with outside auditors
  • Provide strategic planning and forecasting on financial matters, working with the Executive Director, Treasurer of the Board of Directors, and other key staff to analyze current financial performance and project future needs
  • Manage daily cash flow, ensuring availability of capital to meet all obligations.

 Organizational Administration

Lead and coach the Business Manager and Administrative Coordinator to effectively carry out core administrative functions, including office management, bookkeeping, and IT services.

  • Commitment to, and deep understanding of, BAGLY’s mission
  • Strong familiarity with issues of particular relevance to intersectional identities within the LGBTQ+ community; lived experience is preferred
  • Prior experience as a senior-level finance or accounting leader at a nonprofit organization; MBA/MPA or CPA preferred but not required
  • Experience maintaining the quality and content of all financial data, including reporting and audit coordination
  • Ability to collaborate with and translate financial concepts across teams, including external stakeholders
  • Prior experience leading the reporting on grants and contracts to funders and government agencies
  • A successful track record in analyzing and setting priorities with an ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience leading and managing teams to reach ambitious organizational goals and outcomes
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to anticipate and address challenges and roll up your sleeves to tackle problems with flexibility 
  • Outstanding internal and external communication skills and ability to advocate for your point of view and to influence others
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

 This position is currently remote, though we are expecting employees to return to work in summer 2021, or as soon as we can safely return to the workplace according to state and city COVID-19 guidelines.

Salary

$70,000 - $75,000The salary for this role is commensurate with experience.
