    Description

    Developer, The Public Interest Network

Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Chicago, IL; Philadelphia, PA

Are you a tech-savvy person who cares about clean air, clean water, and open space? Do you think we can and should reduce waste like single-use plastic and disposable technology? Do you believe that organizing and advocacy have the potential to solve the problems that you are most concerned about? Are you interested in using web design and software development to help create social and political change? If these questions excite you, consider joining our Digital Team.

The Public Interest Network’s Digital Team is hiring a Developer. Our team works with Environment America, PIRG, Environmental Action, and other public interest organizations to fight global warming, protect kids from toxic threats, conserve our public lands and wildlife, and more. A key part of our strategy to win in the long run is to reach and build a large list of supporters who can take action both online and offline and contribute financial support to the campaigns.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Improve our supporters’ experiences with us online by writing and maintaining HTML and JavaScript code for websites and emails, and troubleshooting error reports from supporters using our sites.
    • Maintain Analytics and related reporting.
    • Design and code new supporter-facing and organizer-facing tools and websites that improve user experience and efficiency to win campaigns.
    • Maintain and document in-house tools and provide first-line technical support.
    • Assist in other tasks and projects to grow and improve The Public Interest Network’s digital presence and other projects to advance the organization's long-term goals.

This position requires excellent judgment, discretion, and the ability to oversee significant projects.

    Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the Digital Team’s Developer will be passionate about creating social and political change. We’re looking for a solid tech generalist who is capable of learning and working with a variety of systems, programming languages, and people.

    • Working with HTML and JavaScript is a central part of this position. Direct experience with web development is a plus.
    • The ideal candidate will also be familiar with Python (preferred) or another programming language, such as Ruby or PHP.
    • Comfort with the Linux command line is a plus but not required.
    • Curiosity and an eagerness to learn new skills and languages will be key factors for success.

    Compensation and Benefits

The starting target annual compensation range for someone with 3-5 years of relevant experience is $37,000-40,000. Candidates on the lower end of directly relevant experience should expect to be on the lower end of this range; candidates on the higher end of relevant experience are likely to be on the higher end of this range. The Public Interest Network offers an excellent benefits package. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, paid time off, a commuter benefit program, a 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long term disability insurance, and may include needs-based student loan assistance. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

    Location

This position could be based in Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Chicago, IL or Philadelphia, PA.

Why work with The Public Interest Network? Check out 10 reasons: https://publicinterestnetwork.org/why-work-with-us/.

    About The Public Interest Network:

The Public Interest Network operates and supports more than a dozen organizations – including PIRG, Environment America and their state affiliates – committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to change.

Our work focuses on the problems that arise from America’s single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth: We’re still burning fossil fuels even though it’s changing the climate. We keep giving antibiotics to healthy livestock, even though it leads to “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant. We use plastic products for a few minutes only to throw them away so they pollute the oceans for centuries.

And our approach is unique: We focus on the big picture, but are relentlessly pragmatic and prioritize making a difference in people’s lives over making a statement. We work with everybody to make change happen, political ideology aside, championing good ideas wherever they come from. And we are serious about the work – we set clear goals, benchmarks, and systems to measure our progress, and hold ourselves accountable to making change now and building for the future.

This unique approach gives our staff an opportunity to make a concrete difference for the environment and the public interest – just as hundreds of dedicated staff have done over our 50-year history. If you want to add to this change-making legacy; if you have the passion and the drive that it takes; if you're looking for a mission, not just a job – then let’s talk.
