POSITION: Substance Use / Anger Management Counselor

DEPARTMENT: Support Services

REPORTS TO: Director of Programs

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non Exempt

Part-time Substance Abuse/Anger Management Counselor


PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Substance Abuse/Anger Management Counselor supports individuals and families experiencing problems related to substance abuse and anger management. This position conducts client assessments, implements patient-driven plans, and connects clients to community resources. The Substance Abuse/Anger Management Counselor will also lead substance abuse and anger management groups. This position reaches out to residents and assists the Support Specialists in responding to client emergencies. This position is for 20 hours per week and reports to the Support Services Manager.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Conducts intake assessments to determine client problems and appropriate tasks.
  • Provides individual substance abuse and anger management counseling.
  • Provides brief interventions with individual clients.
  • Leads or coordinates groups, including Alateen/Al-Anon Family Groups, AA meetings on site, as well as other groups related to substance abuse and anger management.
  • Coordinates or leads harm reduction groups.
  • Leads groups to address anger management.
  • Assesses and provides substance abuse/anger management services to youth aged 16-17.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with outside treatment and other social service agencies, ensuring that clients have maximum access to community resources.
  • Develops aftercare plans and provides client follow-up.
  • Maintains client case records.
  • Participates in meetings, committees, and training.
  • Provides and promotes excellent customer service for all internal and external customers.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE


Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess and maintain certification as an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor issued by a certifying agency approved by the California Department of Health Care Services.
  • Two year’s minimum experience counseling individuals with substance use challenges.
  • Knowledge and training in substance abuse and related issues and understanding of recovery models including harm reduction.
  • If in recovery, at least two years clean and sober.
  • Experience delivering anger management group and individual counseling.
  • Experience with, and commitment to, working with an underserved, low-income community.
  • Access to reliable transportation, with current insurance and valid driver’s license.


Preferred Experience/Skills

  • AA or BS degree in a related field preferred.
  • Understanding of dual diagnosis and the interplay of mental health and substance use problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
  • Conduct oneself in external settings in a way that reflects positively on Alameda Point Collaborative.

  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds
