COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

AFRICAN SERVICES COMMITTEE, INC.


African Services Committee (ASC) is a Harlem-based human rights non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and self-sufficiency of the African Diaspora immigrant community. African Services provides health, housing, legal, educational, and social services to thousands of immigrants each year. African Services has also worked on the frontlines of the global AIDS epidemic since 2003; operating three clinics in Ethiopia, and through advocacy and policy work in the U.S. and abroad.

The primary responsibility of the Communications Director is to promote the aims and objectives of African Services. As part of a dynamic, effective organization, the Director generates press strategies and develops public communication materials - online and print - to increase the visibility and support for ASC’s campaign goals and services, both in the US and abroad. 

These goals include increasing opportunities for legalization of immigration status; greater recognition of immigrant and community health and human rights issues, and strengthening access to HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, treatment, care, and support.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Create communication strategies and develop effective and compelling messaging for ASC’s social media and multimedia platforms and publications to broaden ASC’s reach to external audiences 
  • Manage and develop written content for the agency website 
  • Research, write, edit, and generate ideas for bi-monthly newsletter, social media posts, feature articles and fundraising campaigns that showcase ASC programs, initiatives, clients, employees, milestones, and newsworthy events.
  • Create targeted materials for annual fundraising appeals and events; i.e. Give Out Day, Immigrant Heritage Week etc.
  • Manage ASC donor relations and recognitions and support leadership in fundraising goals.
  • Lead development and production of annual report, 6 e-newsletters per year, agency brochures, audio and video PSA’s, and other promotional materials as needed.
  • Cultivate relationships with key reporters on immigrant health and immigration policy; create and pitch articles, op-eds, public statements etc. to reputable local, national and international media outlets.  
  • Provide rapid responses to media enquiries, directing reporters to appropriate ASC staff and community spokespeople
  • Contribute to existing and new programmatic initiatives where needed, including conducting focus groups, leading the design of social media marketing interventions
  • Other communication duties as assigned.


CORE COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public health or other social service field
  • Excellent writing, communications, and media strategy skills, and press contacts.
  • Prior experience in press work related to public health, HIV/AIDS, access to medicines, social justice/ human rights. 
  • Experience with multi-media tools including up-to-date desktop publishing software and social media platforms.
  • Fluency in French, Spanish or other second language preferred.
  • High level of initiative, self-motivation and creative energy.
