Media Matters for America—a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media—seeks a Researcher for its Climate & Energy Program. Media Matters’ Climate & Energy Program works to improve media coverage of climate change, energy policy, and other environmental issues by publishing original research and reporting and by serving as a resource for journalists and advocacy partners.


Role Summary:

The Climate & Energy Researcher monitors and analyzes media coverage of climate change and energy issues, conducts quantitative and qualitative research, and writes and edits content.  


Reporting Structure:

  • Reports To: The Climate & Energy Researcher reports to the Director of the Climate and Energy Program.


Responsibilities:

  • Media Monitoring: The Researcher will track a wide array of conservative and mainstream media coverage of climate and energy issues. S/he will identify false and misleading media narratives that could undermine progress on climate and energy issues, as well as positive media narratives that help to advance a progressive environmental agenda.


  • Research: The Researcher will design and execute in-depth research projects into media coverage trends and sources of misinformation. S/he will also keep up to speed on important climate and energy policy developments.


  • Content Generation: The Researcher will propose ideas for website and social-media content and provide constructive feedback on content ideas from other members of the Media Matters staff. S/he will write blog posts and rapid-response research items; help create videos, graphics, and social-media posts; and help conceptualize and produce in-depth studies of climate and energy coverage in the media. The focus will be on generating high-impact content that rebuts false attacks on climate science and clean energy or otherwise improves the conversation about these topics in the media.


  • Editing: The Researcher will edit blog posts, research items, and internal documents written by others on staff, recommending substantive improvements, fact-checking, and adjusting language as necessary to produce clean, clear, and effective written material that adheres to Media Matters style.


Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in media, research, and/or policy related to climate change, energy, or the environment.


  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, political science, journalism, communications, or other relevant field; or equivalent work experience.


  • Research and analysis skills, including ability to use Nexis, scholarly databases, and Excel.


  • Strong writing ability, strong editing ability, and clear communication style. Ability to present complex information in accessible ways.  


  • Understanding of the current and projected landscape for climate and energy policy, and strong familiarity with related politics and current events.


  • Familiarity with print, broadcast, and online media trends, and working knowledge of journalistic ethics and newsroom practices.


  • Ability to generate creative ideas for research and content.


  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team, as well as to work independently on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.


  • Social media savvy and an understanding of the role of social media in disseminating information.


  • Comfort in a fast-evolving digital space, including learning to use new software and research tools.


  • Commitment to progressive ideals, climate action, and environmental justice.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience producing online content on deadline, including multimedia content.  


  • Experience producing charts, graphs, and other visual representations of information.


  • Experience fact-checking.


  • Familiarity with media recording applications such as Snapstream, TV Eyes, IQ Media, and Veritone.


  • Familiarity with environmental and climate advocacy groups and campaigns.
