Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) seeks (3) full-time Social Workers to provide case management for children involved in immigration removal proceedings. Each Social Worker will be assigned to work in the immigration unit of one of LSNYC’s borough offices located in Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan/Staten Island. The Social Workers will be part of an interdisciplinary team of attorneys, paralegals, legal workers and social workers.

We partner with community-based organizations, elected officials and pro bono lawyers to meet the needs of the communities we serve. Responsibilities:


The Social Worker will work predominantly with children and young people in removal proceedings.


The Social Worker’s responsibilities include:


·      Working as part of an interdisciplinary team in addressing the client’s legal needs and assisting clients in understanding the legal process;

·      Helping clients identify medical, mental health, housing, education and social service needs;

·      Providing counseling, crisis intervention and referrals to culturally- appropriate services to address client needs;

·      Identifying and establishing relationships with social, medical and other services needed to assist our clients.

·      Providing psychosocial assessments for clients to be submitted to USCIS, EOIR, New York State courts or other government agencies;

·      Appearing in court and testifying on behalf of clients regarding psychosocial assessments;

·      Providing clients with court accompaniment, advocacy, counseling;

·      Attending community events, providing community education and trainings;

·      Obtaining SIFI certification, once eligible, and supervising MSW graduate students; and

·      Preparing data reports, as necessary.


Requirements:


·      Master of Social Work degree (and license upon hire)

·      Proficiency in Spanish (preferred)

·      Demonstrated commitment to social justice and commitment to working with low-income clients

·      Experience working with populations who have experienced complex trauma

·      Experience working with children (preferred)

·      Experience working as a social worker in a legal environment (preferred)

·      Outstanding organizational, planning and time management skills

·      Excellent interpersonal skills

·      Deep understanding of and ability to work well with people of diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds
