ABOUT YOUTHCARE: YouthCare works to end youth homelessness and to ensure that young people are valued for who they are and empowered to achieve their potential. Founded in 1974, YouthCare was one of the first programs to serve runaway and homeless youth on the West Coast. The goal was to help young people find safety today and build a future for tomorrow. Using a youth-centered approach, we ensure that young people experiencing homelessness ages 12-24 have the hope, skills, and confidence to gain long-term stability.

POSITION SUMMARY: YouthCare partners with Seattle Public Schools Interagency Academy to facilitate The Garden program, a work-based learning opportunity for students at the Columbia City School site. The projects are designed to provide opportunities for young people to gain work maturity and job skills, earn a stipend, gain school credit, and increase school engagement.

NON-MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEES ARE REPRESENTED BY THE OFFICE AND PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (OPEIU).

Under the supervision of the Employment & Education (E&E) Program Manager, the Interagency Garden Program Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Interagency Garden Program. Responsibilities will include providing supervision, training and direction to a crew of approximately 10 high school students working alongside staff on gardening, landscape maintenance, harvesting, selling at the Columbia City Farmer’s Market, and various field trips. They are responsible for creating and facilitating the gardening curriculum and managing all aspects of operating the Interagency School Garden. Additionally, providing maintenance of space and equipment, stocking of supplies, coordinating with community partners and volunteers, tracking data, processing payroll and delivering checks.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports Interagency Academy with recruitment and assess & enroll young people for job readiness program.
  • Provides guidance, supervision, and instruction to young people working in a gardening education program with little or no work history who have many barriers to employment and success in school.
  • Facilitate production garden, soft-skill, & job readiness curriculum to participants with support from Interagency staff and Career Coordinator.
  • Help set standards for appropriate behavior on the worksite, ensuring work-site safety and learning of safety procedures.
  • Maintain garden management and soil health plans utilizing holistic, organic and agro-ecological practices.
  • Support young people through successful completion of training using strengths-based and harm reduction approaches.
  • Communicate and collaborate with community partners.
  • Organize field trips and transport young people on outings.
  • Assure adequate supply of materials for the operations of the programming and garden.
  • Assure all essential equipment is in working order and meets all safety standards for each day’s work.
  • Provide written reports as requested.
  • Meet regularly and coordinate with participant’s career coordinator and Interagency staff to assure successful work experience for each client enrolled.
  • Assist with the delivery of young peoples’ paychecks and stipend paperwork to the YouthCare main office.

QUALIFICATIONS-

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2 years of work experience with high school aged young people.
  • 1 or more years of experience of successfully working with vulnerable young people.
  • Experience with gardening and knowledge of organic gardening practices.
  • Experience working with young people in a structured program or environment
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience and credentials must comply with program contract requirements
