In 1991, four women, gathered around a kitchen table, pioneered an organization to fight the rare disease that three of them had been diagnosed with. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA), exists to support patients and caregivers fighting this rare disease, which can affect all people of all ages and backgrounds. Pulmonary hypertension is a chronic and life-changing lung disease that can lead to right heart failure if left untreated. We believe that anyone whose life has been touched by this difficult illness has the right to fight back as much as they are willing and able and our job is to empower them to do so.

PHA, a nonprofit organization, is unique because we support and engage all communities affecting and affected by pulmonary hypertension, including patients, caregivers, doctors, nurses, and other health professionals.

Since our founding, we have far outgrown the kitchen table, serving 16,000 members, offering high level medical and patient education, raising awareness of PH in the general public and medical communities, advocating for legislation, supporting research, and helping patients connect with others to end their isolation.

The Director, Development / Fundraising is responsible for generating revenue by developing and executing a short-and-long-range individual giving plan with clear goals, objectives and strategies to effectively improve the acquisition, retention and upgrading of donors, including annual giving, direct response, sustainer program, donor stewardship and relations, ultimately building a strong donor pipeline.



·        Develop and execute an annual giving program consistent with the overall fundraising strategies of PHA that encourages giving from diverse revenues sources, including individuals, businesses, employees and other key constituents by communicating with and make direct, face-to-face donor solicitations

·        In conjunction with the Vice President, Development, work and build relationships in key markets with constituents by leading events, soliciting gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations.

·        Prepare plans, written briefings and offers ideas on next steps for all donor and donor-prospect cultivation for identified portfolio of donors; responsible for related follow-up as outlined in plans

·        Identify and engage with new prospects and opportunities for philanthropic support as appropriate, with a focus on expanding the breadth and depth of the donor base, increasing gifts from current donors and acquiring new donors

·        Partner with and engage staff, board members, current donors, volunteers and other key constituents, as appropriate, to develop new prospecting and development opportunities

·        Manage PHA’s direct response program by developing annual direct mail and e-communications, managing appeal donor files, managing expenses to ensure net returns are in alignment with fundraising goals and engaging outside vendors to deliver timely campaigns

·        Manage PHA’s sustainer program by engaging donors through a year-long recruitment, retention and stewardship plan including special mission updates for donors

·        Responsible for analysis of daily and monthly reporting, tracking systems and other reporting in Raiser’s Edge database to ensure benchmarks are being established and met

·        Regularly attend organization-sponsored events and support PHA’s key constituents


·        Experienced fundraising professional with a minimum of 5 years’ progressive experience and a track record of proven success, including experience in annual giving programs, direct response and monthly giving programs

·        Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred; equivalent experience will be considered

·        Experience effectively leading projects and processes, working both independently and collaboratively, in a fast-paced environment

·        Proven track record of success in growing and managing an annual giving program, including donor cultivation and giving, direct mail programs and monthly giving programs

·        Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience using Raiser’s Edge or other databases required

·        Strong verbal and written communication skills

·        Excellent relationship building and networking skills required

·        Strong multitasking and organizational skills required

·        Demonstrated passion for fundraising and commitment to mission                   


·        Reports to Vice President, Development


Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work may require some weekend and/or evening work and domestic travel.
