About the Position

GSO’s Organizing Fellowship is an opportunity for individuals with a passion for ending poverty to gain critical organizing and leadership skills while taking part in GSO’s outreach effort around the CalEITC. Fellows will learn a variety of organizing skills and apply the skills to connect more than 1.5 million Californians with tax credit information, and recruit volunteers to help power our outreach.

Fellows will graduate not only with practical skills and knowledge, but as a part of a network of passionate leaders in the anti-poverty workspace. As part of the program, fellows will regularly meet with organization leadership to learn about nonprofit, anti-poverty, and advocacy careers.

Please note that this fellowship will be part time at 15 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Texting:

● Using our mobile-texting platform, communicate with low-income Californians throughout the state about the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), the federal EITC, other available public benefits and GSO advocacy campaigns

● Meet and track goals and deliverables

● Provide regular reports about results and messages

Volunteer Recruitment and Management:

● Under the supervision of the Canvass and Volunteer Coordinator, fellows will learn how to make connections with individuals, nonprofit organizations, clubs, and PTA’s to recruit volunteers

● Train volunteers on our mobile-texting platform, evaluate their performance, and offer support

● Lead debriefs about our outreach with our volunteers to receive on-the-ground feedback about the effectiveness of our programs

Policy:

● Support the Policy department by compiling memos about elected officials

● Participate in various advocacy actions during the tax season

Education and career development:

● Engage in weekly discussions with different members of GSO to learn about careers, anti-poverty work, and organizing skills

● Receive support and guidance from GSO staff on their post-fellowship plans

Skills and Experience

Required skills and experience:

● Passionate about anti-poverty work and helping low-income people access financial resources

● Excellent interpersonal skills

● Must be able to work independently, with strong time management skills

● Highly organized with excellent attention to detail

● Must be able to work 15 hours per week

● Must be able to work remote (access to a laptop/computer AND phone is required)

● Must be 18 years of age or older as of January 1st, 2021

Desired skills and experience:

● Experience working with low-income communities

● Bilingual Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese speaking and writing skills desired
