At One Degree, we believe finding emergency food, shelter, or health services when you or your family is in need should be as easy and straightforward as ordering a book on Amazon. We create modern tech-driven solutions that have helped more than half-a-million families find, access, and manage nonprofit and social services efficiently and with dignity.

As an innovative, tech-driven non-profit, One Degree has a solid funding foundation: Google, Y Combinator, the Knight Foundation, Tipping Point Community, and many others support our work. And we’re just getting started.

We are looking for a Development Manager to join our team of 10 full time staff in San Francisco to build sustainable revenue over the next three years in partnership with foundations, major donors, government agencies, and key partners. For the right person, this role is an excellent opportunity to level-up professionally while serving our most vulnerable neighbors.

We are a low-ego, humble group of people that love what we do and work every day to bring out the best in each other. We are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply for this role, even if your skills are not a perfect match.

You will thrive in this role if:

  • You believe it’s time for tech to bring meaningful innovation to the challenges facing low-income families
  • You are excited about applying an iterative, faster-paced startup approach to development problem solving
  • You are an excellent writer that knows a powerful story is the basis for all good writing, including development-driven writing
  • You are a task management geek who can take a complex project and turn it into concrete results
  • You’ve executed development tasks and can evolve processes and systems that allow you and others to do the best possible fundraising work
  • You thrive when you have meaningful metrics and clear targets for success
  • You don’t sacrifice the “good enough” solution for the “perfect” solution when “good enough” is the right call, all things considered
  • You want to be the best at what you do, and are up for what that entails (like juggling deadlines in a fast-paced, growing organization, or stretching past your comfort zone)
  • You’re an engaged collaborator, love getting and giving meaningful feedback, and you are committed to the success of your team and your colleagues

The Development Manager will drive forward One Degree’s development strategy in close partnership with One Degree’s leadership team and staff.

About 70% of the role will be practical, day-to-day implementation of development strategy including pipeline development, solicitation, and stewardship in close collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Rey Faustino. About 20% will be funder-facing cultivation and stewardship including ownership over a portfolio of relationships. About 10% of the role will involve communications management (such as Annual Impact Report and newsletter).

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Meet annual funding performance targets by managing a mix of new and recurring funders that vary in size and type, i.e., major donor, foundation, corporate, government
  • Steward funder relationships to meet our shared goals and increase year-over-year revenue
  • Cultivate prospective funders toward new commitments
  • Serve as the internal expert of your portfolio’s priorities and recent developments
  • Manage an annual calendar of proposals and reports to meet all deadlines with adequate time for drafting, review by stakeholders, and rounds of editing
  • Produce compelling proposals and reports that are accurate and lead to financial commitments, note that with new proposals original language will often need to be produced
  • Ensure efficient coordination of pipeline development and cultivation activities, including internal stakeholder coordination, funder site visits, and accurate database management
  • Ensure that funding opportunities, cultivation activities, and related records are accurately reflected in the donor management database (Salesforce) in real-time
  • Develop reports on pipeline health, progress, and projections using Salesforce
  • Manage prospecting outreach and logistics, including regional fundraising travel plans, funder visits, and events
  • Oversee and project manage the annual impact report, a monthly newsletter and other outbound funder communications
  • Provide detailed, relevant research about qualified prospects, including recommendations for best approaches and social connections
  • Additional responsibilities include management of discreet projects and ongoing operations, including but not limited to gift processing and donor acknowledgement, event management, and reconciliation of financial records

You may be the ideal candidate if:

  • You have at least 3 years of development experience in a fast-growing organization
  • You’ve successfully fundraised at least $500,000 from multiple channels including philanthropic funders and / or government agencies
  • You get that details matter a lot in relationship building: You help take great care of both internal stakeholders (peers across different levels of the organization) and external stakeholders (funders, prospective funders, and partners)
  • You’re tech savvy: High proficiency with Excel/Google Spreadsheets and experience with Salesforce or other fundraising management systems (e.g. Raiser’s Edge) is required. Bonus points if you’ve used Asana or other collaborative project management software

At One Degree, we believe finding emergency food, shelter, or health services when you or your family is in need should be as easy and straightforward as ordering a book on Amazon. We create modern tech-driven solutions that have helped more…
