The Organization


Books for Kids was created in 1986 by a few individuals in New York City who recognized that children who do not have adequate access to books must surmount enormous disadvantages when entering school. The mission of the Books For Kids Foundation is to promote literacy among all children with a special emphasis on under-served preschool-aged children. Books For Kids creates libraries, donates books, and implements literacy programs to help young children develop the critical early foundation and skills they need to be successful in life.


The Position


The Development Manager will be responsible for advancing Books for Kids’ mission through fundraising and outreach to our community of donors. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Manager manages all administrative functions for the Development Department including fundraising, special events, and donor community relations. This is a role that is great for someone that is well organized and enjoys touching a variety of fundraising aspects and being part of a highly collaborative team. 

In concert with staff, responsibilities include:


  • Overseeing and implementing all annual development campaigns including board, corporate, foundation, event, government, individual, and special project fundraising
  • Managing day-to-day development operations including budgeting, calendars, gift tracking, donation processing, donor stewardship, and CRM database
  • Assisting with research, cultivation, and solicitation of current and prospective donors
  • Implementing individual giving programs 
  • Preparing inquiries, proposals, and reports for all institutional funders
  • Overseeing logistics for special events
  • Supporting the board of directors through meeting preparation, communication, and committee administration


Job Duties

  • Work with the Executive Director on prospect research to find new individual, corporate, and foundation donors and develop creative donor outreach strategies
  • Work with the Executive Director on donor cultivation and stewardship of existing foundation, corporate, and major individual donors, including grant-writing and the preparation of compelling stewardship reports
  • Work with Community Manager in the planning of all mail solicitations, special and community events
  • Prepare grant proposal narratives and letters of inquiry for funding requests and grant applications
  • Maintain an accurate grants calendar and proposal submission log, tracking grant deliverables and reporting timelines
  • Manage and maintain the donor database and email distribution databases, including donations made through fundraising pages created on Facebook and other platforms; Ensure all gifts are properly entered in our CRM database and coded correctly against the organization’s operating budget income lines
  • Take ownership of Books for Kids’ online donation pages, including managing and updating all current pages as needed and creating new online campaigns and appeals in collaboration with the Community Manager
  • Write and send acknowledgement letters to all donors and maintain an organized system for tracking written communications
  • Act as a VIP point of contact at events
  • Proactively manage communication, material distribution and reporting to the Board Development Committee
  • Perform other special projects as needed


Skills and Requirements

  • Commitment to the mission and values of Books for Kids and a desire to support that mission through fundraising
  • Superior administrative, organizational, research (using tools like Foundation Directory Online), time management, and analytical skills; attention to detail, meticulous data management, multi-tasking, and the ability to meet deadlines is a must
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Professional and friendly attitude, both in the office and when dealing with donors
  • Two-four years of fundraising or non-profit experience; we are open to candidates who possess the traits that will allow them to be successful fundraisers but who may not have deep fundraising experience
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability and willingness to learn quickly on the job
  • Must be self-motivated and able to initiate projects and ideas
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a small full-time team 
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities relating to cultural competency, diversity and equality
  • The core qualities of flexibility and self-reflection
  • A fabulous sense of humor and a face that lights up when around young children 
  • Donor Pro/Salsa CRM or other fundraising database experience required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and Mac operating system 
  • A creative eye and passion for graphic design a plus
