NYC FIRST is one of the largest and most impactful STEM education organizations in New York

City, with 500 robotics teams in its four leagues/programs, serving thousands of students across

New York City, and providing mentorship from hundreds of professionals and students. NYC

FIRST recently launched an innovative STEM Center initiative, providing high school students

across NYC with access to advanced fabrication and computing equipment, as well as expert

teachers, with the first location at Cornell Tech. NYC FIRST’s goal is to foster a creative,

confident mindset in students that will help them apply innovative solutions to technology-

based problems and other challenges. We aim to lay the groundwork for those students who

can drive the next waves of innovation, and we encourage students to think and act like

scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs in order to prepare them for the increasingly numerous

career paths that demand a deeper understanding of STEM.

About the Role

NYC FIRST’s Operations Manager will be responsible for a range of functions to support the

smooth and efficient workings of NYC FIRST, as well as its expansion, including growth of its

robotics teams and STEM Centers. The Operations Manager will report to and work closely with

the CEO. This position presents an ideal opportunity to contribute to a fast-growing, mission-

driven initiative that is transforming the lives of young people across New York City and beyond.

Functionally, the role includes project management, marketing and social media, logistics and

event planning, and budgeting and expense responsibilities. This role requires work during

certain weekends during robotics competition season (mainly November – March).

Project Management, Marketing

  • Serve as internal project manager when the organization engages external firms (i.e.,
  • PR, branding, website, vendors)
  • Work with FIRST, the national organization, on robotics competitions and other matters
  • Develop and execute a social media strategy
  • Support the CEO on projects and by scheduling and hosting meetings and events
  • Collaborate with other team members on larger projects that require logistical support
  • Manage ordering of supplies for all programs
  • Help develop policies and procedures
  • Event, Logistics and Financial Management
  • Interface with the NYC FIRST finance team, including assisting with payment requests for vendors, teams and other third parties
  • Identify venues for NYC FIRST events
  • Negotiate and draft agreements and contracts
  • Plan event setup with venue, and serve as NYC FIRST point of contact for venues, and coordinate freelance staff for events
  • Inventory and manage materials and coordinated transport of inventory to and from events
  • Ensure that events stay on budget
