Associate Head of School

Position Summary

Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center (Eagle Rock / ERS), is seeking an experienced school administrator to serve as our Associate Head of School. The Associate Head of School works in close partnership with the Head of School to hold and advance Eagle Rock’s mission and vision, achieve operational and educational goals, and embody our commitment to antiracism and social justice. They report to the Head of School while directly supervising our student pipeline, including admissions, wilderness orientation, and college and career planning and readiness. In addition, the Associate Head of School will partner across the organization to support school philosophy, organizational culture, strategic planning, and logistics that help us deliver on our mission and vision.

Qualifications  

  • Master’s degree in education, educational leadership, social work, school counseling or related field 
  • 10+ years of experience in education as a teacher or administrator
  • Significant experience with strategic and operational school leadership
  • Experience in a managerial and supervisory role
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; effective public speaker and listener
  • Strong organizational, time management and leadership skills  
  • Experience living and working in a residential setting preferred
  • Flexibility to work long hours, including evenings and weekends as needed

The successful candidate for this position will possess the following attributes: a deep love of work with high school students; commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment; knowledge of restorative justice, conflict resolution strategies, trauma-informed care and somatic / embodied leadership practices; diplomacy, tact, and discretion with confidential information; proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and to listen to, understand and synthesize ideas from all stakeholders; a sense of humor; visionary thinking as well as demonstrated follow through; ability to thrive in a work environment with multiple, simultaneous projects and frequent interruptions; timely and thorough completion of tasks without supervision or needed followup; a commitment to professional and personal growth; seasoned judgment. Candidates must be willing and able to work and live at a year-round, community-focused, residential high school.    


The position requires experience working with diverse populations, including students from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, LGBTQ students, and students from low-income backgrounds. The ideal candidate is able to express a demonstrated commitment to engage deeply and fully with our organizational priority of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).


Responsibilities

School Administration

  • Represent the interests of and assist in implementing the plans and projects established by the Head of School, including the strategic plan
  • Under the direction of the Head, supervise the integration of all departments into a single institution with a common vision
  • Serve as chair for school-wide departmental meetings 
  • Supervise the development and management of the organizational/school calendar

Staff Culture, Recruitment, Schedules, Growth and Development

  • Serve as the Head’s point person for creating an optimal staff culture and best practices across the organization
  • Build strong relationships with staff
  • Organize and manage staff recruitment and hiring; coordinate hiring needs across all departments
  • Design and implement staff orientation, training, mentoring, and meaningful evaluation
  • Research and coordinate professional development opportunities
  • Assist and work closely with the Head and the directors on staff concerns

Supervise Student Pipeline Staff

  • Directly supervise the Dean of Admissions, the Outdoor Education and Human Performance Program Manager, and the Life After Eagle Rock Counselor
  • Ensure that there is alignment in the student experience as they progress through admissions, orientation and preparations for graduation
  • Facilitate regular meetings with this staff team

Student Support

  • Meet with students as needed
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and sponsors when needed
  • Keep abreast of student behavior and mental health concerns
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Students regarding student issues

School-Wide Involvement

  • On a rotating basis, serve as a duty point person during residential program times, and on-call overnight to respond to emergencies 
  • Engage in weekly staff DEI affinity and alliance spaces, commit to individual/alone DEI learning 
  • Share your unique skills with the school, e.g., sports, art, music, spiritual practices, poetry, yoga, hiking, etc
  • Take on other residential duties related to being an active community member at ERS, as assigned by the Head of School
