Field Organizer in Harris County, Texas

About the Organization 

Unemployed Workers United (UWU) works in multiple states in the Southeast and Southwest to respond to our current economic and health crisis with solutions that will allow all of us to thrive—anchored by five partnered national progressive organizations: People’s Action, United for Respect, Mijente, the National Black Worker Center, and Working Families Party. Our focus is to organize with local grassroots organizations to engage unemployed, underemployed and workers facing precarious employment in building power to change their living conditions in their cities and change the working conditions in their workplaces.

About the Position 

Field Organizer position will be based in Harris County, TX. Our ideal candidate has a strong commitment to racial, social, economic, and gender justice. Is goal-driven, detail-oriented, problem-solver, independent, innovative with political action by and for working people. They have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work form committees with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and challenge people to take risks in order to make change

Essential Responsibilities 

• Building and managing local worker committees for organizing programs and campaigns.
• Build, develop and grow a Harris County-based committee of unemployed and underemployed workers.
• Empower worker leaders to help run different organizing programs and campaigns, including but not limited to local in-person events, distributed & digital organizing teams and digital outreach. 
• Create, host and lead trainings while creating a compassionate and rich culture in local in-person and virtual spaces 
• Work with other organizers and local partners to build programs and campaigns to help maximize organizations online presence through campaign and content development, specifically on worker issues
• Assist in the execution of rapid response online and offline campaigns
• Develop and execute any outreach digital and in-person volunteer efforts
• Manage and sustain UWU’s Harris County facebook group and other local-digital spaces. 
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills 

• 1-2 years of campaign experience as an organizer or in digital/distributed organizing 
• Experience with volunteer leadership development and managing in-person remote volunteer teams 
• Strong skills with social media and distributed organizing tools such as Microsoft Office applications, Action Network and Google Apps (Slack, Gmail,Google Docs, Drive, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc)
• Data savvy and comfortable with technology 
• Team player and a positive attitude are necessary as well as the ability to handle multiple projects or activities at the same time
• Flexibility with work schedule; this position requires evening and weekend work

Key Relationships: Executive Director, Co-Directors of Distributed Organizing, National Distributed Organizers, Local Partners 

Location: Harris County, TX

Salary and Benefits: $42,000 to $48,000 yearly salary based on experience, in addition to a competitive benefits package; healthcare and generous time-off policies.
