For the past twenty years, the NYU Center on International Cooperation (CIC) has been a leading voice on collective action to solve global challenges. In recent years, we have played a role disproportionate to our small size in incubating processes that have had a significant influence on global policy, including creation of the leading international platform to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG16) on peace, justice, and strong institutions; inputs to the reform of the UN; increasing the effectiveness of the UN’s peacebuilding architecture; track-two diplomacy around the conflict in Afghanistan; and cutting-edge investigative research on the political economy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
As an established but fast-growing think tank, the effective communication of ideas is at the core of CIC’s work. It is time for CIC to move to the next level in communications by developing a media strategy and presence; as well as a more strategic approach across all of our programs and audiences. CIC is looking for a senior professional media person and creative innovator who can easily see the policy relevance of our work and constructively transform academic and policy oriented texts into popular and interesting media messages both for the relevant societal debates and the broader public, with a special focus on outreach to traditional media. The candidate we are looking for, preferably has own media and journalism background, a strong vision for communications, a deep network of contacts in traditional and new media as well as a strategic perspective on the use of various media channels and platforms in order to promote our work and messages. The candidate should be skilled in turning narrow/technical ideas, publications, and events into attention-catching messages that will resonate with our audiences and should have a global perspective, in line with our many audiences.
This individual will play a lead role across all strategic communications initiatives for the CIC and partnering programs, with particular attention to its largest program, the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just, and Inclusive Societies (Pathfinders). Pathfinders is a multi-stakeholder platform hosted by CIC with its own distinct branding and communications needs. The Associate Director will work with the communications team to mold CIC’s communications strategy, and will be responsible for building up and executing a dedicated outreach strategy to traditional media. They will also manage CIC’s institutional communications, including web sites, social media channels, and publications. The Associate Director will creatively transform academic and policy-oriented texts into popular and interesting media messages both for the relevant societal debates and the broader public, with a special focus on outreach to traditional media.
Bachelor's Degree in media, journalism, international affairs or other relevant area of study.
Master's Degree in a relevant field preferred
10+ years experience working in media, journalism, and communications relevant to CIC’s work. Must include experience developing and/or leading communications strategies for a relevant advocacy organization, NGO, or think tank.
