Responsibilities

The Volunteer Manager will serve as a member of the HOPES leadership team and support the development and execution of the three-year strategic plan. The position will support our students by building and maintaining a strong base of committed, caring volunteers from the community and AmeriCorps programs in collaboration with the Program Team. The Volunteer Manager will also be responsible for staffing and monitoring volunteer activity at each program site.

Community Volunteer Program Management

The Volunteer Manager will build a strong base of community volunteers by:

  • Contacting service-learning classes and participating in volunteer fairs at Universities
  • and Colleges
  • Conducting lunch and learns for community and corporate partners
  • Overseeing participation in community fairs and other events

The Volunteer Manager will oversee the recruitment, training, placement, and retention of Chicago HOPES for Kids community volunteers by:

  • Scheduling and conducting volunteer training before the program begins each semester,
  • and provide additional training as needed
  • Managing a calendar of volunteer events including volunteer training and appreciation,
  • etc.
  • Overseeing background checks and child protection policy requirements for each
  • volunteer
  • Overseeing assignment of community volunteers to shelter sites
  • Maintaining the master database (Volgistics) of every volunteer with their contact
  • information
  • Collaborating with the Development Manager on social media strategy and posts,
  • particularly related to volunteer recruitment and appreciation
  • Recruiting specialized volunteers as needed
  • To evaluate the volunteer experience and boost retention, the Volunteer Manager will:
  • Evaluate the programs based on community volunteer response surveys
  • Plan and execute volunteer appreciation activities each semester


AmeriCorps/VISTA Program Management

Provide services, training, and support to AmeriCorps Volunteers to ensure that they have a positive and productive service term with Chicago HOPES for Kids

  • Oversee VISTA recruitment, selection, orientation, and reporting in collaboration with
  • Executive Director
  • Assist Program team in AmeriCorps State member recruitment and interview process
  • Developing and coordinating the orientation of AmeriCorps State members and planning
  • and hosting AmeriCorps days/events
  • Lead quarterly AmeriCorps training sessions
  • Oversee the assignment of AmeriCorps State members to shelter sites and managing related concerns

Collaborate with the Executive Director, Program Team, and Development Manager on events, grant writing, and fundraising initiatives as needed. Manage Outreach VISTA and a small team of AmeriCorps members.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Education/Communication/Human Services field
  • Supervisory/leadership skills
  • Experience/commitment to working with underserved, low income, diverse populations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in recruiting, training, and managing volunteers

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Skilled in public relations
