Park Grounds Manager

The Park Grounds Manager will coordinate the procurement and scheduled use of resources such as labor, equipment, and materials to ensure maximum use and completion of work within the budget, safety guidelines, and quality standards. In addition, the Park Grounds Manager will guide and mentor field staff and assist them in carrying out their duties to develop and maintain the Wetland Park and nursery. This position will serve as the lead supervisor for Sankofa CDC’s groundskeeping crew and train crew members on the Sankofa CDC team and in the workforce development program. This position coordinates the work of a groundskeeping crew working in many different facets of groundskeeping to include care of lawns, shrubs, and trees; Bioretention ponds maintenance, clearing of road right-aways, and curbs; rubbish removal; and mulching. The Park Grounds Manager reports to the Wetland Park Programs Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with the Wetland Park Director to set priorities and activities, and schedule work assignments, and directing the work of crew
  • Provides workers with assistance in performing duties as necessary to meet deadlines
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques
  • Coordinates with vendors and contractors on projects and needed maintenance work
  • Assigns and supervises routine maintenance and cleaning needed at all Sankofa properties
  • Schedules work for crews, depending on work priorities, crew or equipment availability, or weather conditions
  • Ensures crew is properly trained and checked out on all necessary operational and safety equipment
  • Leads safe operation and utilization of basic landscape tools (hedge trimmers, blowers, pruners, spades, etc.) and small machinery as necessary (mowers, billygoat, tiller, etc.)
  • Identifies staff development and training needs and ensures that training is obtained
  • Maintains records, prepares reports, and composes correspondence relative to the work
  • Trains new crew members on green infrastructure lessons following a structured curriculum
  • Applies supervisory skills to ensuring employee policies and procedures are followed
  • Requisitions and purchases materials and equipment needed by the crew to maintain the grounds
  • Oversees development and maintenance of native plant nursery
  • Ensures oversight and enforcement of all safety and equipment requirements
  • Establishes and enforces operating procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety
  • Inspects completed work to ensure conformance to specifications, standards, and contract requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Capabilities

  • Significant experience in groundskeeping maintenance, and landscaping work including mowing, pruning, grooming, and general maintenance AND/OR completion of an accredited college-recognized horticulture program
  • Knowledge of soil conditions for the propagation of lawns, shrubs, trees, and flowers
  • Knowledge of small repairs and maintenance
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation (skidsteer, bulldozer, etc.)
  • Knowledge of native plants, LA wetland habitats and green infrastructure
  • Knowledge of the methods of caring for lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers
  • Ability to lead a team and foster a cooperative work environment
  • Skills and experience in training, leadership, and mentorship
  • Ability to supervise a crew of workers in ground and facility maintenance activities
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate program and organizational performance in order to assess efficiency and effectiveness
  • Basic computers skills
  • Ability to conduct training and informational sessions for a crew of workers
  • Planning and organizing, and record maintenance skills
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity understanding of neighborhood resident needs
  • Emotional maturity
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and to perform strenuous physical tasks under a variety of condition
