ABOUT 100KIN10 AND THE UNCOMMISSION

For the past decade, 100Kin10 has led a networked-impact approach to prepare 100,000 excellent science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers in ten years and address the root causes of the persistent STEM teacher shortage in our country. We’re now in the last year of our decade-long effort (and on track to exceed our 100,000 STEM-teacher goal), and we’re planning what’s next, including what our next moonshot will be that will build on 100Kin10’s accomplishments (and learn from its stumbles) and create the conditions for more equitable STEM learning across the country.

To do this, we have designed an unCommission that will bring together thousands of people, especially those from communities that, despite having all the passion and interest in STEM, have been most underrepresented, in a massive and participatory effort to identify the next set of moonshot goals for STEM education that will create transformative change for learning and society. It will uplift thousands of stories from those directly experiencing the STEM education system, centering the voices of Black, Latinx, and Native American students who have been most excluded from STEM education and the workforce. The stories will, we anticipate, illuminate inequities and challenges of the education system while also pointing to places for hope, and then be translated into goals to inspire both local and national action. Because it flips many elements of traditional commissions that are often charged with setting field-level goals, we've dubbed it an unCommission.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH LEAD ROLE

We have intentionally designed an experience that is broadly co-created and co-owned, so that what it produces will have the power and the credibility to catalyze widespread action. The story gathering process will be an inclusive, compassionate, and unprecedented effort of listening and amplifying. We are urgently seeking Community Outreach Leads to support the story gathering process in September. Community Outreach Leads will mobilize young folks ages 18-29 to raise their voice and inform the nation’s top academic institutions, nonprofits, foundations, companies, and government agencies what is needed to create a thriving learning environment for our country’s future leaders and innovators.

Each Community Outreach Lead will be charged with collecting a minimum of 15 stories each, prioritizing stories from Black, Latinx, and Native American folks. This could look like hosting a virtual or in-person event, or 1:1 support to help storytellers prepare and upload their stories. Given the short time frame, the ideal Community Outreach Lead will already be connected with storytellers. Example profiles of Community Outreach Leads might be current students, a community leader, or a teacher willing to tap into their personal and/or professional networks to gather stories.

TIME COMMITMENT AND TIMELINE

Community Outreach Leads’ time commitment is expected to reach around 10 hours total. At a high level, this will look like:

  • ASAP - September 22: Application review, short phone interviews, one-hour group training to equip you with all the language and guidance needed to get started right away.
  • September 22 - October 15: You collect stories! After completing the onboarding training, we expect you to work relatively independently, communicating any needs and updates with our team through a weekly check-in. Our expectation is that you collect a minimum of 15 stories in this time period. The more stories, the better!

COMPENSATION

$200 flat fee + $25 per story collected
