AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter School’s mission is to provide young children with the social, emotional, and cognitive foundations needed for success in school and life.  AppleTree implements a comprehensive instructional model that has resulted in strong outcomes for young children at-risk of academic failure.

The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) provides policy and administrative leadership to AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter School (AELPCS) on all matters related to the educational program.  The CAO reports to the Chief of Schools, and supervises program directors of AppleTree’s Early Learning academic team.. The CAO works closely with the AppleTree Institute’s Instructional Quality team on all matters related to the Every Child Ready instructional program. The goal of this position is to bridge the work of the Instructional Quality team with the day-to-day instruction in AELPCS classrooms, and ensure that all aspects of the educational program are aligned for positive student outcomes and scalable growth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chief Academic Officer’s responsibilities include the following:

Lead the Instructional Model

  • Provides daily oversight of academic leadership across all AppleTree campuses ensuring that student achievement and social emotional goals are met or exceeded, and to ensure high quality implementation of the schools’ educational program.
  • Develops school-wide and campus-specific goals, strategies and plans with academic and operational leaders that support the mission of AppleTree.
  • Builds and supports a culture of measurable results and accountability across instructional domains at all school campuses and the central office. Ensures alignment between AELPCS and AIQ on all instructional matters.
  • Reviews, updates, and establishes policy on implementation protocols for all instructional areas including academic programs, Special Education, English Language Acquisition, Social Work and Positive Behavior.
  • Oversees implementation of high quality school programs aligned with AppleTree’s Every Child Ready instructional model, and demonstrates knowledge and understanding of its three-tiered Response to Intervention (RTI) component.
  • Ensures that all student support programming is aligned with Every Child Ready programming and resources, and that established student support programming is implemented with fidelity and quality.
  • Develops expertise in AppleTree’s Every Child Ready comprehensive instructional model, and ensures overall programs and services policies align with Every Child Ready implementation with fidelity and quality.
  • Systematically uses a variety of valid and reliable data sources, both quantitative and qualitative, to inform decisions.
  • Other duties as assigned or necessary to support the overall academic program

Develop and foster communication networks and strategic partnerships:

  • Represents AppleTree Institute and AppleTree Early Learning PCS as a leader in providing excellent early learning at conferences and advisory groups
  • Develops and maintain excellent working relationships with all school partners in the AppleTree@ model
  • Serves as AELPCS representative on Public Charter School Board committees and/or other OSSE functions related to academic programming.
  • Leads and leverages the integration of strategic partnerships within existing academic programs to improve overall program quality

Upholds professional responsibilities:

  • Communicates frequently with school administrators, peers, and other Institute staff.
  • Collaborates with AppleTree senior leaders, as requested.
  • Prepares reports and presentations for AppleTree board and external audiences, as requested.
  • Respects confidentiality.
  • Supports professional development of ATI and AELPCS personnel in relation to instructional model.
  • Seeks out professional development opportunities for oneself.
  • Demonstrates punctuality, good attendance and professionalism for all duties.
  • Maintains cooperative, respectful and supportive relationships with colleagues.
  • Maintains current on all required certifications, including CLASS, AppleTree’s Quality Indicators, etc.
  • Models best practices within early childhood through the use of tools of CLASS, AppleTree’s Quality Indicators, and other observational tools as needed.


Candidates must have a master’s degree in education, educational leadership or equivalent.  A combined ten years of teaching and educational management/school leadership  experience is required.  Candidates must demonstrate the leadership experience, organizational skills, and communication abilities to effectively support teachers, their instructional teams and school leadership.  Candidates must have experience leading high-performing teams, managing staff, providing constructive feedback, and coaching team members, as well as a demonstrated track record of success in leading initiatives that positively impact student achievement.  Ability to review and use data to consistently drive decisions is a must.  Candidates must have familiarity with AppleTree’s instructional model and strong technology skills and demonstrate a breadth of experiences across academic programs.  A solution-focused, collaborative work style is a must.
