The Researcher leads a wide range of data-driven interdisciplinary research initiatives designed to inform NLADA’s

anti-racist legal and policy initiatives, and to promote excellence in public defense and civil legal aid.   The Researcher will work with NLADA’s Defender and Civil program teams, and research initiatives will frequently overlap when not specifically targeted.  The Researcher is expected to serve as the principal investigator on upcoming quantitative and qualitative research projects aimed at better understanding the operation and

impact of the criminal legal system—including newly funded initiatives on the imposition of fines and fees in the criminal legal system. The Researcher will provide the theory and statistical analyses as part of this process and will be expected to write and execute data-driven reports in collaboration with program staff, Communications

staff, and the leadership of the organization.

The Researcher is an exempt full-time position.

Essential Duties

·       Coordinates various research initiatives to promote data-driven anti-racist policy and practice changes to improve public defense and civil legal aid systems, and the Association’s related work;

·       Leads and oversees research design, including development and maintenance of datasets, evaluation of

metrics and assessment of capacities needed for research success;

·       Leads data collection and analysis efforts, including authoring outcome reports, factsheets, and other

materials that translate methodologies and findings for scientific consumption and for audiences from non-research disciplines;   

·       Conducts federal, state and local research to support NLADA’s anti-racist policy objectives;

  • Co-authors reports with program staff and manages them to completion, including public release and rollout of reports, managing edits rom peer reviewers and organizational leadership, meeting with partners and funders, and speaking at national conferences;
  • Creates engaging and accessible visual formats to present research conclusions for reports and other publications;
  • Responsible for managing multiple, complex research projects to completion;
  • Participates in the development of substantive programming for NLADA’s training events, including topical webinars, and in-person trainings and conferences.

  KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

·       Knowledge of access to justice issues within the criminal and civil legal systems;

·       Knowledge of government and nonprofit data sources;

·       Knowledge of survey and research design methods;

·       Strong research skills, using both web-based and published materials;

·       Strong qualitative and analytic skills, with a keen attention to detail and data accuracy;

·       Strong interest and understanding of technology platforms and artificial intelligence as utilized within legal, social, health and economic sectors;

·       Strong oral and written communication skills;

·       Strong project management and organizational skills;

·       Ability to work independently and in teams; and,

·       Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with ability to manage competing tasks and deadlines.

EXPERIENCE

Experience five years minimum with public policy or academic institution and/ or with public defense /civil legal aid program required;

Experience developing and leading research, including primary and secondary research, empirical and non-empirical analyses required;   

Experience with data science techniques, research design methods, including econometric methods, and experience using statistical software such as SPSS, Stata or other current and comparable programs required;

Experience with diverse technology platforms and artificial intelligence as utilized in legal, social, health and economic sectors required;

Experience using Excel required;

Experience applying research and analysis to identify and address racial disparities in systems preferred; and,

Experience communicating research findings to a broad range of audiences, including clients and client advocates,

policymakers, practitioners, and members of the public preferred;


Education

·      Ph.D., Ph.D. candidate or Master’s degree in social science, public policy, law and society, or related interdisciplinary field required.
