At NYRP we believe that nature is a fundamental right; NYRP stewards 80 acres of city parkland and operates 52 community gardens containing over 20,000 square feet of food production space throughout the five boroughs in addition to building approximately 18 new gardens around the city annually through our Gardens For The City program.

It is well documented that green spaces provide innumerable health benefits – both mental and physical and with the onset of COVID-19, community gardens and access to urban agriculture have proven to be an essential part of our city’s infrastructure. According to The Food Bank of New York City, NYC residents make up half of all food insecure people living in New York State, the city’s food insecurity rate is 12% higher than the national rate. Access to fresh and healthy food is more important now than ever, we need to ensure that community members have the tools, space, support and skill-sharing network that cultivates food security and values choice and cultural diversity in food growing traditions throughout New York City.

NYRP is adding a full-time staff position to our Engagement and Programming team, an Urban Agriculture Manager, to strengthen our Urban Agriculture and Food Security programming. As we expand available growing space in the city, we will maximize our impact through intentional partnerships and direct hands-on technical support to insure abundant and healthy yields, introduce diverse nutritious varieties of fruits and vegetables, and share best practices to reduce food waste.

A successful candidate will have substantial experience cultivating food in an urban environment, familiarity with the community gardening network in NYC, and a passion for supporting the interests of NYRP’s many constituents.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

· Outline annual sustainable crop production strategies to meet the needs of both new and experienced community gardeners in community garden spaces citywide;

· Provide guidance and hands-on support for soil fertility management, planting, cultivation, organic weed and pest control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling to reduce food waste;

· Maintain regular and substantial communication with all stakeholders, including the Senior Director of Engagement and the Director of Garden Horticulture and Citywide Greening Projects, community members, and partners;

· Coordinate distribution of seeds, seedlings and gardening supplies to new Gardens For The City groups;

· Maintaining accurate records of all relevant food yield data, including seed and plant distribution, harvest poundage, and number of volunteers;

· Plan and coordinate educational, outreach programs and events such as tours, volunteer workdays, skill-sharing events, garden events, speaking engagements and fundraising events.

· Prepare weekly reports updating the Senior Director of Engagement & Programming on all activities and bi-monthly time allocation records;

· Help develop an annual urban agriculture budget and sustainable improvement plan.

Skills Required:

· Strong communication skills (bi-lingual English/Spanish)

· A strong interest in food, community health, community gardening and urban farming issues required.

· Experience with community organizing and/or engagement, particularly with underrepresented communities required.

· Prior experience working in community gardening, urban agriculture, and food justice and/or community health required.

· Excellent plant and pest identification skills, familiar with plant disease and non-pesticide remedies

· Proficient with use of hand tools and small power tools

· Excellent organizational skills, must be able to work independently

· Ability to lift 40lbs

· Clean driving record (mandatory)
