Director of Development

 

 

SETI Institute’s mission is to understand and explain the origin and nature of life in the universe, and to apply the knowledge gained to inspire and guide present and future generations. We have a passion for discovery, and for sharing knowledge as scientific ambassadors to the public, the press and the government. SETI Institute has an annual budget of $15 million.

 

Position Summary

The Director of Development will lead the planning and execution of SETI Institute’s fund development, by harnessing the enthusiasm and energy of our scientists, our Board of Trustees, and our staff, while bringing your own passion for matching donor aspirations to our vision and our mission.

 

In addition, as a senior management member, the Director is responsible for leading SETI Institute’s fundraising efforts towards securing support from individuals, foundations and corporations. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Development will plan, develop, implement and measure the success of comprehensive strategies to raise individual and institutional donations. 

 

The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced and resourceful professional who is highly collaborative, charismatic, and excited about science. He or she will be an articulate and persuasive writer, and an engaging public speaker who can maintain productive relationships with our Board, staff, donors, and community partners.

 

 

Major Responsibilities

The Director of Development will be responsible for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to maintain and grow our $15 million budget through solicitation of major gifts, special events and grant writing.

 

·      Partner with the CEO and the Board members on all major fundraising activities;

·      Actively work with the CEO, Director of Finance and senior management team to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to include private gifts as well as corporate and foundation grants;

·      Develop and sustain consistent engagement/interaction with major donors;

·      Facilitate stewardship of current donors to develop deeper ties to the Institute

·      Develop planned giving and endowment campaigns;

·      Manage development staff and provide mentorship and direction;

·      Develop, implement, track and report fund development annual plan, goals and objectives

·      Measure success of fundraising initiatives;

·      Develop an understanding of the science and education programs at the Institute;

·      Enhance the culture of philanthropy among our staff and Board; 

·      Ensure the success of the Board’s fund development efforts by engaging, educating and supporting Board members;

·      Collaborate with the senior management team to ensure the organization’s achievement of our strategic and operating plans;

·      Represent SETI Institute at relevant public activities;

·      Coordinate and manage SETI’s outward message to current and prospective donors;

 

 

Qualifications

·      Bachelor’s degree required. Masters preferred;

·      Seven or more years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, with a track record of significantly increasing donations;

·      Proven track record of donor stewardship and cultivation with high worth individuals, foundations and corporations;

·      Demonstrated effective project management skills, working on multiple projects and meeting deadlines;

·      Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills;

·      Experience making the ask;

·      Strong organizational and time management skills;

·      Professional manner, with the ability to work within a team as well as independently;

·      Proficiency using fundraising databases as well as Microsoft Office
