Manager of Advocacy and Strategic Communications

The Justice Lab in the Columbia School of Social Work is hiring a Manager, Advocacy and Strategic Communications in support of our Youth Justice Initiatives team, which seeks to end the punitive youth prison model, shift resources into the communities most impacted by incarceration, and center those who are most impacted in defining and designing what true safety looks like.

The Manager will support YJI’s federal campaign to accelerate youth prison closures and move resources into communities most impacted by incarceration; develop and implement communications strategies to advance YJI’s federal campaign and our work in various state and local jurisdictions; provide support in creating and overseeing the development of messaging and products for YJI’s place-based and advocacy work, which aims to inform what the future of youth justice should look like.

  • Manage and provide day-to-day support to YJI’s federal campaign to accelerate youth prison closures and move both financial and other resources, as well as transferring power and access, into communities most impacted by incarceration, including coordinating closely with different national partners; facilitating and attending various meetings related to campaign goals; liaising with other members of YJI team, including student employees, to identify appropriate resources that could support work. (40%)
  • Develop and implement communications strategies to advance YJI’s federal campaign and our work in various state and local jurisdictions, including op-eds, fact sheets, briefs, Congressional briefings, and events; stay abreast of other advocacy efforts aligned with YJI’s core goals; formulate/implement social media strategies to advance Lab’s presence on YJI issues. (30%)
  • Provide support in creating and overseeing the development of messaging/products for YJI’s place-based and advocacy work to drive what the future of youth justice should look like, including reports, videos, white papers, tool kits, and webinars; present work at conferences, trainings, and other professional gatherings. (30%)
