Who We Are 

Food Bank’s Community Nutrition team is responsible for providing high quality and nutritious food and nutrition education to Food Bank’s network of food relief Community Based Organizations, Churches and Schools. Our team’s goals include: 

  • Educate community members about the benefits of eating nutritious foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins/dairy  
  • Empower community agencies to create healthy food environments  
  • Promote community health by connecting our members to nutrient rich foods and opportunities for greater physical and emotional wellness 


Food Bank’s member network includes nearly 1,000 community organizations and it is our goal to ensure we provide opportunities for them to meet the needs of the most vulnerable citizens of New York City. The Community Nutritionist provides nutrition education workshops at Food Bank member agencies throughout New York City, including food pantries, shelters and community agencies to encourage greater acceptance and knowledge of the benefits of healthy eating. This includes the provision of nutrition education, curriculum and cooking demonstrations using Food Bank produce and highlighting food safety and sanitation practices to households served by our membership.  

As the Community Nutritionist, you will be a key member of the Community Nutrition Team and will perform the following services for the Food Bank in the capacity of a Public Health Nutritionist: 

  • Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive nutrition education and obesity prevention program for low-income individuals accessing emergency food programs 
  • Identify food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens who will participate in the nutrition education activities 
  • Schedule and conduct nutrition education sessions and recipe demonstrations with member agency households 
  • Participate in activities sponsored by the Food Bank, community groups and other partners to facilitate program objectives 
  • Conduct 9-12 nutrition education sessions each month reaching at least 70-100 participants using lesson plan materials provided 
  • Oversee all policy, systems and environment change activities, such as the Healthy Pantry Initiative, with participating agencies 
  • Utilize learner-centered and facilitated group discussion teaching techniques to enhance effectiveness of nutrition education sessions 
  • Seek opportunities for professional development to improve effectiveness in the performance of job duties 
  • Maintain regional calendar / contact information for nutrition education website 
  • Identify community events that support program goals for the intended target audience 
  • Provide written reports on all nutrition education activities. 
  • Actively participate in all team conference calls and events 
  • Strive to manage all resources wisely for the maximum use of the program 
  • Participate in other nutrition education related duties as “assigned” (ex. curriculum redesign, recipe development, etc.) 


This role will help Food Bank For New York City reach our strategic goals by leading these three critical areas: 

  • Workshop Scheduling and Planning: The Community Nutritionist will be responsible for recruiting community organizations in Food Bank’s membership to participate in nutrition education workshops, assessing the effectiveness of workshop delivery, and taking initiative to think creatively in order to enhance impact of community nutrition education    
  • Workshop Facilitation: This role will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of workshop delivery including purchasing food, transporting workshop equipment, delivery of nutrition lessons, conducting cooking demonstrations, administration of participant surveys, and ensuring excellent communication with member agency staff and clientele  
  • Reporting: The Community Nutritionist role requires thorough, timely tracking, reporting and documentation of all activities 



  • Travel throughout the Food Bank’s member network to facilitate workshops and conduct agency site visits to assess readiness and better understand the types of trainings that are needed;  
  • Support cross department trainings and events, including NYC’s Annual Conference on Hunger and Poverty hosted by the Food Bank For NYC and CookShop’s annual training;  
  • Ensure managerial staff are provided with regular training reports detailing attendance, outcomes, and connection to additional programming; 

 Work in close partnership with Member Engagement, Program Evaluation, Operations and other Programs teams to refer or share outcomes to further engage with member network;  

 Create monthly reports as required by management that accurately reflect activity and performance and assist in the preparation of department budget as needed; produce monthly expense reports and complete monthly database entries 

 Represent the Food Bank at public functions as assigned/appropriate; and 

 Perform other duties as required. 



  • Registered Dietitian preferred OR 
  • BS in Nutrition OR 
  • BS in Public Health with a minimum 15 credits in nutrition 
  • Must have 2 years community nutrition/public health experience 
  • Strong computer skills 
  • Must be able to lift 15 to 20 pounds in order to transport workshop materials 
  • Travel throughout New York City required with possible overnight travel 
  • Valid driver’s license and car strongly preferred (travel will be reimbursed)

  • A demonstrated ability to work in the field independently and communicate with team members with limited weekly face-to-face interaction
