General Position Summary

The Staff Researcher will support policy work statewide, focusing particularly on the work of our campaigns in Southeast Los Angeles and Wilmington. These campaigns are centered around addressing poor industrial land use and poor planning practices, improving air quality, and developing community-controlled renewable energy and revitalization strategies, in addition to helping guide our communities toward a local regenerative economy. This position reports to the Director of Research and Policy and will be based out of our Southeast Los Angeles office (working virtually until the SELA office can safely reopen per LA County health guidelines). Tasks for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical and policy support to staff and members on our campaigns
  • Analyzing and researching technical and policy data in a variety of contexts such as: urban planning, air quality, zoning, renewable energy, etc., and communicating findings to community members in an accessible, engaging manner
  • Engaging in policy advocacy, testifying at various hearings, and attending stakeholder meetings
  • Engaging in and/or coordinating participatory action research projects
  • Giving presentations to a wide range of audiences such as CBE members, elected officials, policy makers, students, media, donors, and the general public
  • Contributing to research reports
  • Collaborating with allies in various coalitions
  • Working with academic partners and other experts in various fields
  • Serving as a community partner liaison with student research projects at universities
  • Assisting with other research tasks as needed.


Specific Job Skills:

  • Knowledge of environmental justice and environmental issues
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Ability to use various types of software for mapping, modeling, and statistical analysis (ArcGIS, SPSS, R, Python, and/or Excel)
  • Strong verbal, visual, and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work independently, and contribute to a positive, diverse, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work in a manner that complies with organizational standards and policies collaboratively with other team members, including organizers and attorneys
  • Spanish language proficiency desirable but not required

Experience and Job Requirements:  

  • Strong understanding of and commitment to social and environmental justice
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Geography, Economic Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health or other related fields in social and/or physical sciences or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Previous work-related or university-level research experience
  • Ability to engage a broad spectrum of people representing various social, cultural, and professional backgrounds

Salary

$58,240 - $58,240

Benefits

This is a full-time, overtime-exempt position, with an annual salary of $58,240, which will begin mid-summer 2021. The Staff Researcher will receive CBE’s comprehensive benefits package, including a generous vacation and leave policy; fully-paid premiums for medical, vision, and dental insurance; a 401(k) retirement plan; and a flexible spending plan. CBE pays full premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, spouse or domestic partner, and any dependents.
