POSITION SUMMARY

SPARK is a national research study supported by the Simons Foundation that aims to recruit, engage and retain a community of 50,000 individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their family members. Participation in SPARK will involve contribution of medical and behavioral information online, mailing in saliva for genetic analysis, the option to have genetic findings related to autism returned, and consenting to be invited to participate in future research studies (recontacting). The SPARK community will provide researchers with an efficient way to invite individuals to participate in their research.

Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, SPARK, the UX (User Experience) Engineer will be responsible for working with the clinical and software development teams to help design and develop front end components of the SPARK webpages.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to all aspects of the design and redesign processes of SPARK related webpages
  • Inform engineering team's design decisions through research, experimentation, and revision
  • Help implement design decisions by contributing to front end software development
  • Incorporate usability testing into design work
  • Prototype emerging features and screens (wireframing, interactive prototypes, etc.)
  • Develop set of UX-oriented style guidelines with which to direct our work
  • Collaborate with others and work well with developers and product management
  • Stay relevant with latest techniques, tools and designs.


Qualifications

Education
  • Relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience


Design
  • User experience design expertise
  • Experience with all stages of a design process, including a firm grasp of interaction and usability design, as well as graphic design and development concerns.
  • Skilled at designing original websites and applications focused on user experience
  • Must be self-directed, confident and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication, in both written and spoken English, with both technical and not-so-technical people.
  • Ability to explain why a design works or why it doesn't
  • Strong visual design skills (e.g., latest trends, color, typography).
  • Strong interaction design skills (i.e., wireframing, prototyping - including quick low-fidelity prototypes - HTML5, CSS3).
  • Portfolio or website requested with application


Technical
  • Five years of professional work experience
  • User interface development proficiency
  • Experience with JavaScript, CSS, HTML and AJAX
  • Experience with version control systems
  • Experience with Bootstrap, Foundation and React is preferred
  • Experience with design and development for mobile platforms is preferred
