Full Time Mitigation Specialist

The Louisiana Capital Assistance Center (LCAC) is soliciting applications for a mitigation specialist in our New Orleans office. The mitigation specialist will be part of a team of five in-house mitigation specialists and will work on case teams with attorneys, paralegals and other mitigation specialists representing clients in capital proceedings. 

 The mitigation specialist will investigate the circumstances of the offense; obtain and analyze anecdotal and documentary evidence relevant to the client’s life history; identify, locate and interview witnesses relevant to both the crime and the client’s life history in a culturally competent manner; furnish memos on a variety of subjects including social histories and chronologies; consult with the team to develop penalty phase theories of the case and case strategy; assist in the identification of and work with experts; and provide litigation support to the team. Critically, the mitigation specialist will regularly visit with and build rapport with the client and the client’s communities in conducting their investigation. The ideal applicant will have investigation experience and/or experience working directly with indigent populations; a driver’s license is required.

 The LCAC is a non-profit public interest law firm founded in 1993.   The LCAC represents indigent defendants in capital cases – primarily at trial level, but also on direct appeal, in state post-conviction and in federal habeas proceedings. We represent clients in Louisiana, Texas and in federal court. The LCAC is strongly committed to the critical role of the mitigation specialist and a team based approach in capital defense.
