The National Spine Health Foundation (NSHF) was established in 2002 and is headquartered in Reston, VA. It is a patient-focused 501(c)(3) dedicated to empowering patients with knowledge and hope. Through our patient advocacy programs, we support those impacted by neck and back pain and spinal disorders. We provide trusted, unbiased education from the nation’s leading experts. Our mission is to improve the lives of those suffering from spinal health conditions through patient education, clinical research, and patient advocacy.


We are looking for a strategic communications professional with experience in the healthcare field to lead the Foundation’s communications efforts. This position reports directly to the CEO and will be responsible for content development, PR strategy and all constituent communications. This position will collaborate closely with the Foundation’s development function to execute on donor communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop organizational communications strategy which includes developing content calendar, building brand awareness, maintaining communication with constituent base.
  • Lead the acquisition of constituents through thoughtful content which can include gated content, webinars and online events.
  • Manage social media strategy on all platforms which includes management of the Spinal Champion Facebook group’s engagement.
  • Build relationships with media partners through proactive outreach. Develop pitches for CEO and Board members to be featured on national platforms.
  • Oversee website which includes content strategy, messaging and ensuring the patient journey is at the forefront of the UX experience.
  • Monitor SEO work and develop strategies for increasing NSHF’s reach.
  • Drive the development of materials for partner physicians to feature in waiting and examination rooms that feature the National Spine Health Foundation.
  • Work directly with fundraising consultant and staff to tailor fundraising materials for donor audience.
  • Oversee the National Spine Health Foundation Journal which includes partnering with Board members who contribute to the publication.
  • Manage digital communications consultant.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or relevant field
  • Masters of Public Health preferred but not required
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Proven experience with health-related educational writing a benefit
  • Experience developing and executing strategic communications plans a must
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to multitask and work well under pressure
  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities
