Director of Communications

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of Communications leads the outreach efforts of Global Cities, a non-profit established under the auspices of Bloomberg Philanthropies, helping senior leadership develop compelling messages that place the organization at the center of national and international conversations about K-12 global education. A strong external advocate for the work of Global Cities, the Director reports to the Executive Vice President and collaborates with senior leaders to create and implement clear and effective communications across multiple channels—including digital and video—that explain the mission, vision, and activities of Global Cities and raise its profile.

The Director of Communications also directly assists the President of Global Cities, overseeing the President’s internal and external communications, handling the President’s relations with media and with appropriate influencers. S/he is a thought partner and a confidante of the President, briefs the President, and drafts messages in her voice. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide strategic counsel to the President and senior leadership team on communications and outreach.
  • Lead the development and implementation of Global Cities’ strategic communications plans and messaging.
  • Oversee communications functions, supporting and coaching staff as they work toward organizational goals.
  • Develop strategic relationships with the press and oversee media outreach and other strategic communications.
  • Directly support the President in her role as key spokesperson for Global Cities.
  • Develop and write effective materials for speeches, press releases, panel presentations, websites, and social media.
  • Generate high-impact press placements.
  • Coordinate and support a public narrative about Global Cities that builds awareness of its mission and increases its visibility. 
  • Support senior management in engaging education leaders and other policy influencers in the work of Global Cities.
  • Develop and implement Global Cities’ social media strategy across relevant platforms.


REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Superior writing, speaking, editing, interviewing, presenting—and listening—skills.
  • Significant experience—ideally in education-related fields and at increasing levels of responsibility—in developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • The ability to develop relationships with relevant top-tier journalists.
  • Familiarity with the national education landscape and experience representing an organization and its agenda to external audiences.
  • Experience with multimedia editorial production and dissemination as well as the savvy to hire and supervise design professionals, photographers, filmmakers, and other consultants when appropriate.
  • Experience and proficiency with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and YouTube,
  • An understanding of how communications can elevate the work of a non-profit organization.
  • The ability to take charge of projects and complete them on time, on budget, and attentive to detail.
  • A high level of energy, commitment and enthusiasm for Global Cities’ programs and goals.
  • The ability to work cooperatively with colleagues in Global Cities’ collaborative culture.
  • Appropriate education and work experience, including a significant role in either public relations, public affairs, journalism, advocacy communications, or a related field.


This is a full-time, exempt position; work hours may extend beyond the beyond the standard workday depending upon project demands. Based in Global Cities’ New York City headquarters, the position requires some travel. The position offers significant opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
