J Street’s Government Affairs team—named one of DC’s top lobbying operations by The Hill—is seeking a new professional to help advance a nuanced understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by coordinating educational trips to the region and providing other opportunities for engaging on the issue. 

The Congressional Education Associate should be a highly organized self-starter, dedicated team player, and gifted cultivator of relationships, who thrives on hitting ambitious goals and is excited by the challenge of changing the dynamics that shape the discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Congress, American politics and the American Jewish community.


Responsibilities

The Congressional Education Associate is J Street’s point person for educating Members of Congress and their staffs on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the potential for a more constructive US foreign policy toward it and on related issues on which J Street advocates.

Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for:

  • Managing logistics, budget, and stateside planning for delegations to Israel-Palestine, including recruitment of Members of Congress, congressional staff, and other target groups
  • Staff the delegations to the region with Members of Congress and congressional staff;
  • Liaise with program funders, providing them with regular updates; and
  • Conceive, initiate, and provide ongoing educational opportunities for trip alumni to engage with J Street’s issues and each other. 
  • Coordinating educational programming on J Street’s issues for Members of Congress and congressional staff
  • Work with the Director of Government Affairs and J Street’s Public Engagement team to facilitate production and dissemination of educational resources to stakeholders on Capitol Hill, including briefing books;
  • Plan education training sessions for Hill staffers, as well as briefings on timely issues;
  • Curate congressional education resource webpage;
  • Own the planning and execution of congressional education and other working-group meetings held by J Street’s President and Members of Congress; and
  • Arrange logistics for meetings between visiting guests from the region and Members of Congress.
  • Overseeing the planning and execution of national advocacy events
  • Primary manager for J Street’s national advocacy events, coordinating with colleagues across J Street to identify, request and schedule target meetings;
  • Communicate with participants who will attend the advocacy meetings in a clear and organized manner; and
  • Manage the production and dissemination of materials for J Street national advocacy events. 


Skills and Characteristics

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in project and relationship management;
  • Ability to create systems for managing complex projects, ensuring that tasks don’t slip through the cracks;
  • Capacity to juggle competing demands and prioritize without sacrificing quality;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and poise when interacting with Members of Congress and other VIPs;
  • Eagerness to work with Members of Congress, Congressional and campaign staff, and grassroots and grasstops leaders;
  • Ability to draft clear, concise, and professional written communications to key stakeholders, including reports and emails;  
  • Flexibility to travel at least twice a year to Israel-Palestine), and to put in extended hours around large events such as the national conference;
  • Positive attitude and the desire and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team; and
  • Comfort with current business technology, online communications and data management.

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with the workings of Capitol Hill, including schedules and procedures
  • Experience planning and managing Congressional delegation travel and/or other VIP travel overseas

J Street is the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans working for the future of Israel as the democratic homeland of the Jewish people. The organization believes that preserving Israel’s Jewish and democratic character depends on achieving a two-state solution, resulting in a Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security.

The salary for this position starts at $45,000 for qualified individuals. This is a full-time, exempt position. Our comprehensive benefits package includes paid vacation and sick leave, personal leave, generous parental leave, paid time off on many federal and Jewish holidays, health and dental insurance, company-paid life insurance, a 401k program, commuter benefits, and a flexible spending account. 

J Street recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in J Street’s bargaining unit and is covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
