POSITION SUMMARY  

ECOSS seeks a Director of Programs who is a compassionate and empathetic leader with the skills to be able to support, mentor, and uplift staff during a time of transformation for the organization. The Director of Programs will have experience working with people from different cultural backgrounds, and will bring a strong Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) lens to all aspects of their work.  

 

The Director of Programs will be responsible for the following four areas of work for the organization:  

    

  • Steward Program Accountability and Impact 
  • Provide Whole Person Supports to Staff 
  • Foster Collaborative and Equitable External Partnerships 
  • Facilitate Participatory Processes for Program Development 

  

The ideal candidate is an experienced director-level professional who has worked in the nonprofit sector and is committed to social and environmental justice. They should understand the role and contributions of community-based organizations in the environmental movement and have a passion for mentoring and helping nurture the professional and personal wellbeing of others. A “must-have” for this position is being able to facilitate conflict resolution with the goal of fostering an equitable, safe, and caring workplace culture.  

  

The Director of Programs will be a member of the Senior Management Team and work collaboratively with the team to support the organization’s financial, cultural, and operational health. They will develop and enhance systems for programmatic accountability and effectiveness.  

  

  BACKGROUND 

 

ECOSS is a local nonprofit organization that specializes in environmental outreach and engagement with BIPOC and immigrant communities. in bridging knowledge and cultural gaps, thereby empowering businesses and diverse communities to implement environmentally sustainable practices. Our staff speak several languages and work with Asian, Pacific Islander, African and Latino immigrant communities. More than two decades of experience has made ECOSS a leader in multicultural environmental outreach and engagement.  

  

ECOSS is at a pivotal moment. We have grown over the past few years and now have 16 full-time staff and a budget of $2M. Our staff come from and reflect the communities we serve; we are 1st and 2nd generation immigrants and Black, Indigenous, and people of color. We believe that frontline immigrant and refugee communities impacted by environmental hazards bring cultural knowledge and lived expertise that is necessary to achieving sustainable solutions.  

 

Our revenue is currently predominantly from contracted work with local government partners and therefore comes with lots of restrictions. In the next year, we aim to increase our unrestricted revenue, build organizational infrastructure and capacity, and complete a community-centric strategic planning process that would support an organizational vision firmly grounded in environmental justice principles. 

 

ECOSS delivers programs that address environmental equity and social justice, solid waste management, pollution prevention, green infrastructure, transportation, clean energy, clean water, clean air, and environmental access for all. As such, the Director of Programs will provide technical, managerial, and administrative leadership for a wide range of environmentally focused programs and to the diverse staff that serve these programs. Responsibilities and Scope   

The Director of Programs will report to the Executive Director.  They will serve as the senior lead and advisor for 6 program/project managers. They will also provide supports and guidance for coordination between the Community Engagement Specialist Team and Program Management Team. The position will be a close thought partner to the Senior Community Engagement Manager and Senior Program Manager, as well as an accountability partner (formerly supervisor) to 2-3 program staff members.   

  

In addition to providing guidance and mentorship to staff, this position will help us build out some internal systems for general staff supports.  A lot of our projects are funded through government contracts, so this position will also help staff manage those partner relationships and deliverables.    

  

The Director of Programs will not directly manage their own programs or field-based projects, except to fill in on a short-term basis in the case of a staff absence or vacancy. That said, they are expected to be involved on-the-ground in project work to be able to maintain trust and rapport among staff, and to provide ongoing evaluation of program impact, community needs, and staff needs. Being involved “on-the-ground” does not mean micromanaging projects; rather, it means being present at community outreach events and engaged in field work, while maintaining a balance to give program managers autonomy to lead their projects.  

   

Essential Responsibilities and Duties include the following:   (note that percentages are intended as estimates; work will ebb and flow in the different categories)  

 

Steward Program Accountability and Impact (40%) 

  • Lead program evaluation to ensure ECOSS is effectively stewarding our programs and staying accountable to the communities we serve. 
  • Design and implement new systems and structures to enhance accountability and effectiveness in our work. Examples of systems and structures include:   
  • program staff onboarding procedures 
  • structural supports for accountability partners (supervisory staff) 
  • formalized feedback systems and participatory processes  
  • integrative tools for effective task delegation, project management, and team communication. 
  • With the Senior Program Manager and Senior Community Engagement Manger, conduct regular meetings to review current and future projects, discuss project and/or employee issues, and staff workloads.  
  • Provide expert technical input on project work plans, budgets, and reports, as needed.  
  • Troubleshoot with staff and offer strategy guidance for meeting project objectives, carrying out activities, data collection and analysis, and reporting.   
  • Stay connected to the work happening on-the-ground by attending selected community engagement activities and events (including on some weekends and evenings). 

 

 

Provide Whole Person Supports to Staff  (40%) 

  • Provide support to staff through empathetic listening and advising. Advocate for staff needs with compassion as well as with a firm understanding of and adherence to organizational HR policies.  
  • Coordinate recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of new program staff 
  • Boost project staff knowledge, skills & abilities with targeted group and individual training and mentoring.  
  • Nurture staff’s growth and development with attention to both personal staff and organizational needs 
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings. Create, model and promote effective communications.   
  • Facilitate conflict resolution internally among program staff 
  • Foster a healthy, caring, and collaborative work culture that supports individual wellbeing and effective teamwork among program staff as well as across different teams 
  • Assess and mitigate a wide-range of staff needs for thriving in the work (needs related to wellbeing, equipment, staffing, communication, etc.) 

 

 

Facilitate Participatory Processes for Program Development (10%) 

  

  • Provide leadership through bottom-up management and collaborative, participatory-based processes to identify and set programmatic priorities for the organization. 
  • Design stakeholder engagement and feedback systems that will inform short- and long-term strategies for meeting existing and emergent community needs. 
  • Help the organization identify and pursue opportunities for public and private funding/contracts that are aligned with our strategic plan and vision.   
  • Contribute as a member of the Senior Management Team and work collaboratively to support the organization’s financial, cultural, and operational health  
  • Participate in organization-wide initiatives and activities, such as all-staff meetings, strategic planning activities, and events.   

  

 

  Foster Collaborative and Equitable External Partnerships  (10%) 

  • Cultivate and grow relationships with community and other project partners (coalition partners, environmental firms, government agencies, foundations, and more) 
  • Attend events that support our projects and help us to build relationship in community 
  • Serve as representative and ambassador of ECOSS in public settings 
  • Serve as secondary point of contact for projects 
  • Support staff in contract negotiations, external communications/relationships, relationship management with government, industry, and community partners. 

 

 

 

 

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH THE FOLLOWING:

  • 5+ years of professional project management and people management experience, including director-level (or equivalent) experience    
  • Background in nonprofit and/or community-based-organization work  
  • Demonstrated skills in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging  
  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution 
  • Experience creating and implementing systems to enhance staff supports and organizational effectiveness  
  • Lived experience that reflects the experiences of the communities ECOSS serves (holds intersectional identities that include BIPOC and/or immigrant identities; and/or has experienced environmental burdens or injustices)  
  • Excellent accountability leadership and people management skills that includes listening with empathy and empowering and lifting people up so that they can thrive in their professional roles   
  • Excellent communicator who easily connects with people (remote conferencing, verbal and writing).   
  • Self-starter, team-oriented and collaborative.  Able to troubleshoot and problem solve. 
  • Have a vision for managing a diverse team of dedicated staff through compassionate leadership  
  • Build strong teams through demonstrated integrity, open communication, and collaborative decision-making.    
  • Financial acumen with experience understanding and preparing and managing project budgets.  
  • Strong technical writing skills and experience with grants/contract reporting  
  • Organizational change-management experience.   
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite.   
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience

Benefits

  • In this position, you will have a flexible work schedule in a family-friendly workplace. Most staff currently work from home when they are not out in the field conducting outreach and education. Because the position requires relationship building, this position would require you to meet ECOSS staff and community members in-person, including on occasional evenings and weekends. Therefore, the position is not fully remote. 

 

  • ECOSS offers 3 weeks of vacation in the first 12 months; 4 weeks starting at the one-year anniversary. 

 

  • Sick Time accrues at the rate of 1.5 hours for every 40 hours worked.
