Alaska Wilderness League is committed to protecting and defending our “last great wilderness” amidst a national assault on our public lands and waters. The League is looking for a dynamic and talented individual to join our fundraising team as an Annual Giving Manager, to help raise the much-needed resources we need to win these fights.


Alaska Wilderness League is the only Washington, DC-based conservation group devoted full-time to protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other wilderness quality lands and waters offshore in Alaska. Founded in 1993, the League is a 501(c)(3) organization that works at the federal level on a variety of issues affecting Alaska’s wild lands and waters. With headquarters in DC and offices in Alaska and across the country, the League’s mission is to lead the effort to preserve Alaska’s wild lands and waters by engaging citizens and decision makers with a courageous, constant, victorious voice for Alaska.


Primary Role

The Annual Giving Manager is a growing and critically important position responsible for organizing and managing an expanding annual giving program. In addition to supporting direct mail and online outreach to donors and prospects throughout the country, this person will manage donor events, support and engage in foundation and corporate fundraising, and assist other staff, board members and high-level volunteers to maximize their impact on an emerging culture of philanthropy.


All said and done, this individual will have an opportunity to write, research, cultivate, solicit and steward in an effort to secure funding for Alaska Wilderness League and its programs.


The position will report to the Development Manager and receive additional support and mentoring from the Development consultant, while also working closely with the Development Coordinator.


Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Assist with Development Plan implementation
  • Implement annual giving program
  • Manage a pool of 150 leadership annual giving donors and prospects
  • Assist with corporate and foundation tracking and reporting
  • Assist with advancement communications and publications
  • Implement donor events
  • Lead donor and prospective donor research
  • Assist with prospect tracking
  • Assist with report generation including board reports and progress reports from Raiser’s Edge
  • Oversight IT: gift processing, gift acknowledgement, and data management in Raiser’s Edge
  • Participate in regular moves management team meetings to facilitate action steps and ensure tracking and progress towards fund development goals.


Financial Resource Development

  • Responsible for annual giving program--coordinate with Development and Communications team to ensure timely, cost-effective and results-oriented direct mail, online giving and personal solicitation programs for all gifts below $1,000. 
  • Provide staff support to board members/volunteer leaders working with the Alaska Wild Society ($500+ donors) and Wild Stars Monthly Giving Program.
  • Corporate Relations: track and manage all corporate giving initiatives in coordination with staff and board leadership.
  • Foundation Tracking and Prospecting manage grants calendar to ensure timely applications, reporting and implementation in coordination with development and program teams. Research and identify foundation prospects.
  • Generate and maintain updated research, portfolio plans, gift/ask information, meeting debriefs and donor/prospect data in Raiser’s Edge.
  • Support quarterly and annual progress-to-goal planning by preparing for and participating in development team strategy meetings, including relationship mapping, in order to build out the pipeline for donors.


  • Advancement Communication and Publications: collaborate with the Communications team to develop stories for the newsletter and other publications for fundraising purposes.
  • Ensure that donor stewardship communications and website are robust and donor-centric so that all donors feel connected and appreciated.
  • Ensure all annual and online giving efforts are on message and anchored in larger strategic plan for AWL.


  • Participate in the preparation of annual Development Plan, which includes a review of the year’s activities and sets specific goals and objectives for the next and future fiscal years.
  • Reports: generate reports that track and/or demonstrate progress towards goals. This includes fundraising reports for the board, prospect tracking reports for management and reports on progress against plan for management.
  • Work to foster an atmosphere of cooperation and ownership of the values, vision and mission of the organization to reinforce a common sense of purpose among the team.



  • Work and travel as necessary to successfully meet established goals and objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualification Requirements

3+ years of fundraising or related experience

BA/BS degree preferred, although relevant professional experience can offset this.
