SEIU Local 503, Oregon: Now Hiring Political and External Communications Strategist


SEIU 503 is a union of 65,000 public workers, care providers, and non-profit employees in Oregon. We envision a just and vibrant society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where all workers can provide for themselves and their families.


Purpose of this position:


Design and lead communications programs to support legislative campaigns, political campaigns, and bargaining campaigns with a focus on issues impacting public employees and care providers.


Responsibilities include:


·        Developing and executing communications plans, including:

o  Collaborating with the communications director and other department directors to develop messages, timelines and assignments.

o  Writing talking points, memos, digital communications, mail, op-eds and other materials as needed.

o  Designing handouts, social media graphics, presentations and other materials as needed.

o  Recording and editing short videos.

·        Analyzing legislation, ballot measures, polling, research, and other documents related to public policy to inform messaging.

·        Serving as a team lead.

·        Supporting bargaining campaigns.

·        Developing and strengthening relationships with members of the media, and training SEIU members as spokespeople.


Minimum Qualifications:

·        Position requires deep knowledge of public policy affecting our members, political organizing experience, and media experience.

·        At least 2 cycles of experience on a candidate or ballot measure campaign, or 1 cycle of experience on a candidate or ballot measure campaign plus additional experience in advocacy, journalism or legislative campaigns.

·        Media experience should include development of message (including rapid response messaging), managing media relationships, and spokesperson training.

·        Experience in management or as a team lead.

·        Experience working with coalitions and working to mobilize the community in campaigns.

·        Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, with tight timelines, and with a variety of personalities and organizations. 

·        Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and carry it through to conclusion without close supervision. 

·        Possess an understanding of the political structure and process.

·        Strong written and verbal communications skills.

·        Capable of using computer and various software packages. 

·        Ability and stamina to work irregular and long hours, and attend weekend and evening activities.


Travel Requirements and Working Hours:

 

Office and field work involving travel to all areas of the state - sometimes with overnight stays - in a variety of environmental conditions. Long hours required as political and union campaign seasons demand it.

 

Required Special Skills, Licenses, or Certificates:


Typing and writing capability, valid driver's license. Operation of Motor Vehicle is Required.
