Founded in 1902 as a settlement house to help New York’s increasing immigrant population adjust to life in a new country, Greenwich House today offers a variety of programs and approaches that continue to provide thousands of New Yorkers with health and wellness supports, education, personal enrichment, and skills building and cultural experiences.


Position Summary:  

The Director of People and Culture role at Greenwich House is a rare and exciting opportunity for a strategic yet hands-on professional to make an impact at a mission-driven organization. As a key member of the leadership team, the Director of People and Culture will oversee a thoughtful team of professionals through every step of the employee experience- from strategic planning, recruitment of new and diverse talent, people and organizational development, employee and labor relations, benefits, compensation, and compliance. S/he/they will partner with the leadership team to advance DEI principles, approaches, and initiatives throughout the organization. 

The Director, leading a team of 4, is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all human resource policies and practices for employees in our diverse set of programs. We employ a talented team of 300 unionized and non-unionized staff who provide thousands of New Yorkers with daily programming that spans art, education, health, and human services. The Director of People and Culture will lead our efforts as we continue to build an employee-oriented, inclusive, equitable, and high-performance culture.


Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Proven success leading the Human Resources function in organizations of similar size and scope.
  • Ability to partner with all levels of an organization and a diverse range of people.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational competencies, including the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated team-building skills, supervisory and leadership experience.
  • Passionate about problem-solving and applying data-driven approaches where appropriate.
  • Prior experience working with unionized and non-unionized staff; thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Flexible work style to meet demands in an often-changing environment.
  • Must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Eight to ten years of human resource management experience.
  • SPHR or SHRM-SCP preferred.
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now a strong preference

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement:

In order to protect our staff and to provide safe and reliable services to our clients, students, members, program participants, and the communities that we serve, as of October 29, 2021, we are requiring all Greenwich House and Barrow Street Nursery School new hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to their start date. We will consider exceptions for religious and medical reasons, where appropriate. “Fully vaccinated” means you must have both doses of a 2-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the second dose, or have received 1 dose of a 1-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the dose. Proof of vaccination status must be submitted prior to your start date and includes CDC Vaccine Card, NYS Excelsior Pass, NYC Vaccination Record, and other official Vaccine Record.
