The TRANSform the Vote Campaign Organizer is a temporary member of the NCTE and NCTE Action Fund team (through mid-November 2018), primarily coordinating political field operations activities of the Action Fund organization, acting as the point person working closely with senior leadership in recommending organizational endorsements of candidates and action on ballot measures; (where permissible) oversees work on priority campaigns. The TRANSform the Vote Campaign Organizer is responsible for the execution of a robust national voter registration, engagement and turnout campaign for the 2018 election cycle aimed at empowering transgender people, families of trans people, and their allies. Throughout all of their work, the Election Organizer will apply values of racial and economic justice and ensure diversity amongst communities we are mobilizing. In coordination with the Directors of Communication and External Relations, the TRANSform the Vote Campaign Organizer will ensure the NCTE Action Fund’s political voice is part of national electoral dialogue on topics that impact the trans community. The TRANSform the Vote Campaign Organizer will be supervised by the Director of External Relations and works collaboratively with staff across both organizations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Organizes and coordinates the NCTE Action Fund’s participation (physically and virtually) in prioritized elections including ballot question campaigns, and managing related phone banking and canvassing efforts, and press opportunities, and in some cases, participating in these efforts directly
Executes a nationwide voter registration, engagement, and turnout campaign aimed at empowering transgender people, families of trans people, and their allies, educating them about their rights and the issues that impact them, and increasing trans-identified and trans-supportive voter turnout in November 2018.
Along with Communications staff, help create written and video content for all aspects of election work, for use on the website and in social media, and increase the list of Action Fund supporters
Respond to constantly shifting daily events and priorities through strategic thinking and planning, elevating the NCTE Action Fund’s position in national electoral/political dialogue with (a lot of) humor and enthusiasm.
Manages tracking systems including NCTE Action Fund’s electoral calendar, candidate tracker and other related databases.
Represents the NCTE Action Fund in coalition meetings and events where the transgender political voice is critical.
Provides strategic political and electoral guidance to NCTE senior staff and manage vendor relationships as needed.
Always On: Understanding and enthusiasm for working during non-business hours as part of the duties of a political operations professional in the age of the 24-hour news cycle.
Potentially serve as an on-the-record spokesperson as needed.
Experience: Experience in at least one election cycle as part of field operations or as a community organizer for a non-profit or political campaign, or other voter mobilization experience. Familiarity with state and/or national campaigns highly desired.
Project Leadership: Experience in planning and executing projects or initiatives, and ideally, with consultants.
Self-direction: Takes initiative in what can sometimes feel like chaotic or ambiguous environments. Motivated to figure out solutions instead of waiting for directions.
Communications: Strong written and oral presentation skills, with a warm interpersonal style to foster collaboration with partner organizations and campaigns, and the ability to communicate with people of various backgrounds and experiences
Knowledge: Understanding of electoral politics and how to implement and execute a successful campaign. In addition, an understanding of the politics of the transgender movement is desired.
Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work as integral part of a team of hard-working, energetic professionals, taking input from a variety of assertive colleagues.
Prioritization and Detail Orientation: Ability to set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, manage, and complete work on deadline and in optimum quality.
Commitment to Social Justice: An understanding of and commitment to issues affecting transgender people, as well as an understanding of racism, classism and other systems of inter-connected oppressions is critical.
The TRANSform the Vote Campaign Organizer is a temporary position (until mid-November 2018) and works in our national office in Washington, DC. The position will likely involve travel.
