POSITION DESCRIPTION

Centro de Trabajadores Unidos—United Workers’ Center (CTU) seeks a full-time Economic Justice Organizer. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to foster coordination and collaboration in community settings. They will be committed to developing strong relationships with worker members to build power and leadership, and develop and launch worker-owned cooperatives and solidarity economy organizing initiatives that advance social, economic and racial justice. The Economic Justice Organizer reports to the Director of Economic Justice.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit, build, and sustain a strong worker-member base.
  • Create and/or update an accessible, popular education-style Worker Cooperative Development curriculum
  • Facilitate worker co-operative training series for 40-50 members annually, using the created curriculum.
  • Assist in the development and administration of the CTU Cooperative Incubator.
  • Lead the incubation of worker-owned cooperatives including, but not limited to, building worker-owners' capacity to lead, create, and implement: operating agreements; appropriate documentation with the State; business plans; and effective customer relations, contracting, and financial management.
  • In collaboration with the Organizing Team, expand and strengthen outreach to low-wage workers and new member engagement.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Economic Justice, cultivate relationships with organizations, allies, and others in the Chicago and national cooperative and solidarity economy ecosystems.
  • Support the Organizing Team in the implementation of strategic campaigns to address labor and immigrant rights and justice.
  • Attend CTU’s weekly staff meetings and other organizational meetings.
  • Maintain and update all relevant databases & reporting systems.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to assisting with organizational fundraising initiatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One or more years of experience in community and/or labor organizing, including base-building, mobilization, participatory political education, and community-led programming and campaigns.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, economic & racial justice and low-wage workers of color, including immigrant workers.
  • Familiar with or willing to learn about Chicago/Illinois worker-owned cooperative policy.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English, to include excellent written/verbal communication ability and ability to interpret/translate.
  • A commitment to problem solving, with innovative, creative and strong interpersonal, time management, planning, and communications skills.
  • Technology proficiency .
  • Reliable transportation.
