 Mission & Position Overview

Green Plate Special’s (GPS) goal is to inspire young people to experience food,

nature, and connection to community in new and meaningful ways. From our ¼ acre corner of the world in the Rainer Valley, GPS runs garden- to- table youth

programming wherein youth experience food education through gardening,

environmental stewardship, cooking, and sharing meals. GPS works with youth to

foster curiosity and knowledge and to help build food-growing, culinary,

environmental science, and community building skills.  

GPS is a quickly growing and evolving organization, currently

hiring a support team of educators. This part-time position is an

excellent opportunity for an early- education professional. Join a

Position Summary 

The Program Educator (PE) will be part of a team of education assistants

and volunteers, leading students in small teams through hands-on and

curriculum-based food growing and cooking sessions, camps,

and field trips both on-site (GPS property) and off-site (partnering schools).

In addition, the PE will provide support in the kitchen and

garden to maintain the organization and maintenance of supplies and

equipment. The PE will help with the set-up and the clean-up in the

kitchen, garden, and off-site locations. Program Educators will have

opportunities to lead lessons and group activities, help to shape the

curriculum, and contribute ideas for programming. This position reports

directly to the Education Director.  

Primary Responsibilities  

Provides leadership and support to large groups and smaller teams of youth (4th-9th

-grade) in gardening, cooking, and team-building activities with guidance

from the Education Director. Provides support to the Garden Manager to help grow and maintain the garden, including planting, harvesting, and engaging in other garden projects. Prepares for each session and program by reviewing agendas, learning targets and objectives, garden outlines, and recipes. Helps set-up and break down activities in the kitchen-classroom and the garden, assists with kitchen-classroom cleaning, and helps care for our chicken flock with guidance from the Garden Manager.


Preferred: minimum of 4-year college degree with an education focus, or equivalent experience.

Experience working with youth, particularly in a group setting—experience with middle school youth a plus, but

not required.

Experience building curriculum for youth.

Experience working with communities that Green Plate Special serves.

Experience or strong interest in gardening and/or organic urban farming.

Experience or strong interest in home cooking and recipe exploration and creation.

Some schedule flexibility, as programs vary in times from mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and

some evenings and weekends.

Background and Skills 

Ability to build relationships with both youth and adults, and compassionately lead the diverse group of youth we serve.

Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Adaptable to a changing environment, needs of youth, their families, and our surrounding community.

Schedule and Benefits 

20 hours a week, late June-August. Schedule time and days vary depending on the program, with some weekends and evenings are possible (with notice).

Snack and/or meals shared with youth and staff during sessions.

Other Requirements 

Must pass a Washington State and national background check. 

Must obtain a Washington State Food Handler’s card within 1 week following

employment (paid for by GPS).

Must have reliable transportation to and from Green Plate Special.
