Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP) is a non-profit organization comprised of healthcare professionals whose mission is to reduce opioid-related morbidity and mortality by promoting cautious and responsible prescribing practices. PROP works on three major fronts: prescriber education, consumer education, and advocacy.
PROP is currently seeking a dynamic and visionary Executive Director who will provide leadership over the organization’s overall mission and vision. The organization is especially looking for an Executive Director with the passion and experience to lead the efforts of the board of directors and the members of the organization. This position is an excellent fit for an experienced advocate who would be as passionate as we are about ending the historic prescription opioid epidemic. We are ultimately looking for a candidate who can help lead PROP’s strategic actions as the organization evolves to accomplish the following:
- Bring the prescription opioid epidemic to an end, in the US and other countries
- Ensure cautious prescription opioid use policies are implemented as counter measures to opioid manufacturers
- Improve outcomes in patients already on ineffective/unsafe chronic opioid therapy
- Form strategic partnerships with likeminded organizations to accomplish the goals above
The position will be fully remote.
- Responsible for the overall strength and effectiveness of the organization; achievement of organizational goals and objectives; legal compliance and compliance with internal policies and governance procedures; and financial, program and administrative management
- Manage all internal operations and the relationship with the fiscal sponsor, including a strategic budgeting process that must account for the long-term sustainability of an enduring organization
- Initiate and cultivate relationships with donors; primary responsibility for securing resources adequate to support existing programmatic work.
- Research and stay informed about opioid issues central to PROP’s strategic mission and work
- Foster a shared commitment to PROP’s mission and values, ensuring that PROP continues to build on its strong reputation as an activist and clinically relevant organization.
- In collaboration with the Board of Directors, create and implement the long-term goals and strategies for PROP, developing specific strategies to extend our national membership and outreach
- Represent PROP favorably at events, conferences and in the media, cultivating supporters, and leading potential funding applications
- Preserve the organization’s visibility nationally with federal and state policy makers and advocates.
- Serve as primary contact for organizational communications and oversee all internal and external communications and relationships with coalition members, stakeholders and allied organizations; policy and advocacy work; strategic planning and policy consensus; and organize meetings and conferences.
- Maintain positive relations with other advocates, and other constituencies that can influence and support PROP’s mission and vision
- Be willing and able to represent PROP in advocating for improved public health and health care policies
- Support the content creation and revision of PROP’s formal communications, including reports, the website, social media channels, and membership resources
- Support the board in thoughtfully analyzing and developing the organization’s positions on both scientifically based research and on rapidly emerging Federal and State policy statements
Finances and Fundraising
- Development of annual and multi-year budgets for internal and external use while assessing internal needs including review of year-end and YTD income and expenses.
- Monitor grant performance in terms of funds expended in compliance with grant agreements
- Responsible for raising the annual organizational budget and oversees creation of an annual fundraising plan; stewardship of foundation grants, including proposals, reports and other funder communications
- Oversee individual giving campaigns and fundraising events.
- Pursue new and sustainable fundraising opportunities, with the aim of increasing organizational revenue over time
The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:
- A leader with experience reviewing and analyzing research and policy in relevant fields such as public health, medicine and pharmaceutical policy.
- Compelling oral and written communication skills, including significant experience with the media
- Proven managerial skills and financial oversight experience, preferably through work in an advocacy centered nonprofit
- A successful track record of attracting financial support from individuals and foundations
- A demonstrated ability to develop and strengthen relationships with a broad range of people such as policy makers, the media, physicians, scientists, and activists
- A deep commitment to addressing the opioid crisis
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership position managing non-profit organizations
- Advanced degree preferred but not required; relevant experience can be substituted
This is initially an independent contractor half-time position. The position could eventually become full-time, depending on candidate preferences and available monies. No benefits are currently offered. Candidate must be based in the US, but the position is fully remote.
