Position Description: The VA Middle School Program Coordinator will be part of a dynamic and committed team working to provide new opportunities for low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth. The VA Middle School Program Coordinator will develop curriculum and implement afterschool programming, weekend field trips and events, and summer programming focused on helping youth grow in AALEAD’s three outcome areas: Educational Empowerment, Leadership, and Identity. The ideal candidate for this position will possess a passion for positive youth development and working directly with young people, be skilled in building successful relationships, and have strong task management skills.   


The VA MS Program Coordinator is responsible for the following duties: 

  • Coordinate after school and summer programming for Fairfax County middle school youth
  • Develop and implement curriculum focused on helping youth grow in AALEAD’s three outcome areas: educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities 
  • Recruit youth and reach participation targets for middle/high school afterschool & summer programs
  • Conduct afterschool and summer programming in Fairfax County, VA serving middle/high school youth and engage youth in all team initiatives and regional events
  • Develop and maintain professional, supportive, trusting relationships with youth from after school and summer program sites
  • Support Youth Council programming for Youth Participatory Action Research Project and Community Day
  • Lead the MS Youth Allies Program component and collaborate with the HS Program Coordinator to provide Peer-Peer mentoring program support to MS youth
  • Provide transition support for middle school youth transitioning to high school
  • Supervise youth and volunteers as part of the Youth Allies Mentoring Program & tutoring program 
  • Manage community and school partner relationships including direct communication with counselors and administrators
  • Develop relationships with other community organizations to provide new opportunities for youth 
  • Develop relationships with youth parents and families 
  • Manage a program budget, and coordinate logistics of program activities, events and field trips 
  • Track demographic and attendance data in AALEAD’s performance management database, maintain program documentation, and achieve AALEAD and grant-required goals
  • Provide Monthly/Quarterly grant reporting data for Program Manager
  • Support at regional programmatic events and assist with additional tasks as needed


Qualifications: 

  • BA/BS in education, social work, liberal arts, or related field
  • Direct experience working with youth or teaching, experience working with middle youth preferred 
  • Organized and attentive to details
  • Solid oral and written communication skills
  • Sensitivity to the needs of immigrant children and families
  • Ability to work Monday-Friday schedule; flexibility to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Fluency in any Asian language is preferred
