Seasonal Ranger & Gardener - Mashpee, MA

The Opportunity.

This position is a full-time, seasonal, non-exempt opportunity suited to a motivated individual who is comfortable working alone and frequently interacting with the public. In the role of Ranger, they will open and close the property on a daily basis, and encourage visitor cooperation with property rules and regulations. They will patrol properties for litter, graffiti, and maintenance concerns and address minor maintenance issues independently. Maintenance tasks may include brush clearing, light trail work, sign installation, and maintenance of parking areas. In the role of Gardener, they will assist volunteers in maintaining garden beds and landscaping. Tasks may include weeding, edging, trimming, pruning, painting, and light carpentry.

 

The ideal candidate will be energetic, positive, detail oriented, and possess a strong work ethic. The position is expected to begin in mid-May and end in mid-September, and work hours are Wednesday-Sunday 9am-5pm, with the possibility for some part-time work on either end of the season. The Ranger/Gardener will be based at Lowell Holly Reservation and reports to the Associate Field Director. The ideal candidate will have a high level of horticultural skill or willingness to learn, a passion for plants, attention to detail, good people skills, and a positive, collaborative nature. He or she will be able to work independently and as part of a team and will be experienced in leading volunteers.

 

The Cape Cod Ranger & Gardener will work as a member of the South Coast Stewardship Team and assist in the care of Trustees & affiliate properties on Cape Cod, including Lowell Holly Reservation, Mashpee River Reservation, and Armstrong-Kelley Park.

 

In This Role You Will:

  • Trail maintenance
  • Landscaping-including lawns, fields, stone walls and shrubs
  • Structures maintenance – including painting and light carpentry
  • Removing trash/litter
  • Maintain parking areas
  • Greeting visitors on the properties and answering questions
  • Work alongside volunteers in routine garden maintenance including planting, pruning, weeding, deadheading, staking, mulching, raking, edging, watering and pruning.
  • Positively motivate and organize volunteers.
  • Engage with the public in an open and positive manner.
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.

Level of Language Proficiency

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of high school degree or equivalent
  • Experience using and basic maintenance of lawn mowers and string trimmers, or willingness to learn
  • Ability to follow safety standards and techniques and to use appropriate safety equipment.
  • A good attitude, willingness to be flexible, attention to detail, and a commitment to achieving the goals of the Trustees
  • A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy, and own means of reliable transportation
  • Experience in estate or fine gardening or willingness to learn.
  • Some knowledge of the cultivation and maintenance of annuals and perennials using sustainable techniques including integrated pest management (IPM) methods, or willingness to learn. 
  • Experienced in pruning shrubs and small trees or willingness to learn.
  • Able to identify weeds and invasive plants. 
  • Strong communication skills.

  • Variable outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds required
