OUR MISSION

The mission of Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy (KCGPA) is to develop young women to discover their voice, succeed in college, and lead impactful, meaningful lives. KCGPA will be the first single-gender, open-enrollment charter public school in Kansas City. It will enroll 100 fifth grade girls beginning in fall 2019 and grow one grade per year to form a 5th-8th grade middle school and a 9th-12th grade high school.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The founding Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) will be a full-time, exempt position beginning in Summer 2018. Prior to the beginning of this full-time position, KCGPA seeks to hire the individual who will fill this role as a consultant to support initial operational planning and systems implementation. Time commitment for the consulting role will vary from 4-20 hours per week and will be planned in consultation with the Chief Executive Officer. The exact start date of the full-time role is negotiable and may be adjusted as launch plans evolve.  


As the school grows, the founding DFO is responsible for building the operational foundations of the school in support of student culture and academic achievement. The pre-launch planning and first two years after launch will set the trajectory for the school’s long-term success. As the school grows, the founding DFO will oversee implementation and maintenance of clear systems that allow school leaders and teachers to focus on students. This role will work closely with KCGPA’s network team, outside consultants and vendors, and families and community partners. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer.


Strategy and Finances

Collaborates with the Chief Executive Officer and school leaders to 

  • Create and oversee the school’s budget, finances, and relationships with outside vendors
  • Design and implement operational systems that address community, family, student, and staff needs
  • Facilitate flow of information to the Board and all school stakeholders 
  • Build long-term strategic plans and budgets for the organization


School Operations

  • Oversees all school operations 
  • Manages budget and financial systems
  • Creates a detailed start-up checklist and ordering list to ensure that the school starts each year prepared and fully stocked
  • Works with appropriate staff to construct advisory and class rosters
  • Creates and manages teacher, student, and classroom schedules
  • Manages and oversees KCGPA’s facility and physical condition, including: construction and ongoing maintenance; purchasing furniture, fixtures, and equipment; permitting; and relationship with a landlord or seller
  • Manages food and transportation services
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned


Recruitment, Enrollment, and Student Information Systems

  • Works with technology vendors to ensure that the school has a fully functioning technology infrastructure
  • Manages student information database system and generates reports as needed
  • Supports student recruitment through systems and assigns direct reports to project responsibilities in collaboration with the Family and Community Outreach Manager
  • Tracks student admission applications and maintains wait list
  • Manages visitor program and similar community engagement programming


Human Resources

  • Ensures school-wide compliance with health and safety laws, charter contracts, state education mandates (including staff fingerprinting), teacher certification, and all federal and state workplace regulations
  • Ensures that payroll and benefits are timely and accurate


Leadership and Management

  • Models KCGPA’s core values, advocate for our mission, and set the standard for our school culture
  • Builds an aspirational, values-focused culture that ensures staff and students grow both personally and professionally in a strong, trusting community
  • Manages an Operations Manager or Coordinator, Development Manager or Coordinator, Family and Community Outreach Manager or Coordinator, and a Data and Assessment Manager or Coordinator (note that “Manager or Coordinator” roles are typically hired at the Coordinator level with expectation of growth to a Manager level as KCGPA grows)
  • Manages the Office Manager/Registrar and staffs the Main Office when Office Manager is unavailable or not present, and ensures the smooth operation of the main office, including mailings, attendance reporting, office machine maintenance, etc.
  • Manages relationships with all outside organizations and leads the school’s efforts to partner with community leaders and organizations
  • Takes responsibility for outcomes for each team member and external vendors and partners; seeks support as needed to achieve results
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer

  • Bachelor’s degree required, masters preferred.
  • Able to work extended school year and extended day hours.
  • Conversational or better knowledge of a world language is preferred, especially Arabic, Burmese, French, Karen, Kinyarwanda, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, or Vietnamese.


LOCATION

Full-time in Kansas City, Missouri beginning Summer 2018. Options for remote, part-time, consulting, and/or full-time employment prior to Summer 2018 will be considered to begin onboarding and planning earlier. Limited travel is required between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019 to engage in professional development. Specific dates and locations are to be determined in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer and in alignment with the DFO’s professional development plan.

KCGPA addresses a community need for more opportunities for young women in neighborhoods that have been negatively impacted by historical de jure segregation and contemporary de facto segregation. KCGPA will serve young women living in the Kansas City Public Schools district boundaries, with a geographic preference for students from zip codes with the largest gap between demand for and supply of quality schools. 


To ensure every student can achieve at high levels, KCGPA will partner with families and its community to build a strong network of support for every student.
