Substance Misuse Prevention VISTA

Be a part of the solution in preventing substance misuse - join the Afterschool Alliance and the Alaska Afterschool Network as a Substance Misuse Prevention VISTA. This position is based in Anchorage, AK and will support the Alaska Afterschool Network in elevating the benefits of afterschool programs as part of the solution to the substance misuse crisis. Afterschool programs provide protective factors such as mentorship, caring adults, and the opportunity for children to develop a sense of agency that can prevent them from engaging in risky behaviors, including substance misuse.

The Substance Misuse Prevention VISTA will support this mission through:

• Expanding AAN's role as a centralized hub for substance misuse prevention resources for afterschool programs
• Connect afterschool programs with curriculum that educates students about facts and risks associated with marijuana use
• Increase community awareness of the importance of afterschool in substance use prevention
• Increase afterschool program participation in Project HOPE to ensure greater utilization of Narcan kit to prevent opioid overdoes in community-based afterschool program settings, such as libraries, community centers, and park & recreation facilities
